I am looking to have my savage rifle re barreled to 308, this rifle will be used for f/tr and precission rifle compition if that matters, the question is what are the pros and cons of getting a prefit barrel or getting a smith to install the conventional Sholdered way?

With a prefit you get what you get. You may be able to order custom dimensions but it may just be a SAAMI spec chamber I am not 100% sure.

With a barrel blank you can either order the reamer that you want or if your smith has a match reamer already then you get a match chamber.

And if you get it done by a known good gunsmith you will know it was done right.

Depending on the chamber and the manf, you can determine the reamer used in the project. Some will even make your barrel with your supplied reamer. have a look at the list of reamers offered by manf like Shilen and it is massive - plus they have reamers not listed

Shilen prefits are manf by the same gunsmiths that make their BR rifles so the quality of machining is as good as any. I have used several barrels in my F class rigs with no complaints.

Will you be able to spec some obscure throat length or size? Or a 'better mousetrap' wildcat? Not likely but anything commonly used in competition and hunting can be readily found.

And likely, most gunsmiths will not have those reamers either.

The only benefit with a shouldered headspace is you can use a large diameter barrel. For a hot chambering, having that extra metal will help when shooting in the middle of summer to keep the barrel heat better controlled.

I used a barrel block and had no issues.

A shouldered headspaced barrel install will typically cost more overall. Time to completion is similar if you start the clock on a blank.

There are now no shortage of barrel nut headspaced Savages both with factory and aftermarket barrels shooting and competing and winning/placing.

Just get a quality barrel manf well and the results will be positive.

An alternative is you can buy a barrel blank you want and have a smith you like make a prefit.

6, 1/2 a dozen.

Certainly for the needs of F class..... and some SR BR shooters :)
