Hey there,

I see we have another 25-06 thread going right now, but as I didn't want to hijack, figured I would start another one.

I'm just wondering if any members here have experience with any premium bullets in this calibre? I tend to favour heavy-for-caliber bullets when I hunt, but it seems the heaviest premium bullet for the 25-06 is the nosler partition. All the rest seem to be in 115 grain.

I've heard great things about the TSX, but figured I would get the forums opinion on bullets for the 25-06.

(And please no rants about "you don't need premium" etc. I just tend to get premiums for hunting as a cheap "insurance" policy. Just personal preference.)

Speer Grand Slam and the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw are both 120-grain premiums with a good rep. I use a .257 Roberts, not a .25-06, and the only "premium" bullet I've used in it is the factory load 120 Nosler Partition.

I concur with your use of premium bullets having used the 115 Partition with excellent results. The 117 Sierra is my main practice bullet because of cost and POI is very close to the Nosler.
Both of the above as well as the Hornady group well at 1, 2, and 300 yds.
My only disappointment has been the Barnes TSX, which despite grouping well @ 100, spreads out badly @ 200, and is off the paper @ 300.

One of my other rifles does not like Barnes, all the others seem to shoot well with it so maybe its just a quirk of my particular 25-06...

As for powders....RL22, H4831, IMR 4831, 7828, most of the slower burners give good results...

I started a poll on factory loaded .25-06 rounds last fall as I bought my .25-06 off the EE to close to hunting season to load any rounds. I was curious about the cartridge. The federal load in 115gr Partition won the poll (the 100gr TSX and 117gr Sierra gameking and one other were in the poll aswell) I used it to take 3 mulies (meat does) And I was very impressed with the bullet. Closest shot was 35yds and longest was 250 all pass throughs with good wound channels 2 didn't have hearts left and one was a double lung with alot of chewed up lung bits. I would recomend the 115 in a heartbeat.

the Barnes ### design will out penetrate all other bullet designs

I just put up a thread in the hunting section that has a link to a federal video comparing the Nosler Ballistic Tip, Sierra Game King, Tipped Trophy Bonded Bear Claw and the Triple shock from Barnes check it out good video and you will see why picking the right bullet is a big deal.

Swift has 120s but I've use 120 Hornady HPs with stellar performance. Trophy Bonded Bear Claws are done according to Speer. So not much use in load development with the few boxes that are left on the shelves.

While maybe not quite a "Premium" bullet I've had great results with Hornady 117gr SST's on large Saskatchewan Mule Deer, from a 25-06 REM. I had also loaded Barnes 115gr TSX's but never had the chance to use them as the SST's where knocking them down. I've also used Hornady Interbonds, and Barnes TSX's in .30 cal and have always had great results too, and never any accuracy problems.

I loaded 110gr Accubond for my 25-06 when I had it. Quite accurate. Not so for the 115gr TSX (flatbase), which had some stabilizing problems.

I know you said heavy-for-calibre, but there is also the 80gr TTSX coming out, so that's another one to think about. :)

Not to steal the thread, but are any of these high speed fliers "fur friendly?" I've a deal in the works and wondered if my new toy has a dual purpose??

Actually, the light 80gr TTSX, traveling at 3400+fps (IIRC) may be good for fur.

Or try the 100gr SMK.

The light ones (75gr VMax and 87gr TNT) will BLOW 'em up good.
