So I've just got my rPAL and I've just bought my first gun, a p226 enhanced elite and paid a rather large amount of cash to one of the best sig gunsmith in nothamerica to work it over. I do not want to damage this gun with my ignorance. So I'm asking what do I need and how do I learn to properly maintain my new firearm. Obviously ill need a pistol cleaning kit and ill probably go down to p&d's and ask them what they suggest. Will the manual give me enough information on how to clean and oil it? Are there any good utubes that you suggest? What oils, lubes, cleaning supplies do I need? Could use any help you can give as I only have 6 weeks to learn ;)

Edit stupid tablet auto correct. This forum doesn't allow me to change the title but it's my first GUN to arrive

Ya I thought first guy, maybe you meant to post in the off topic forum instead ;)
Yeah, this would be the wrong forum to ask questions about oiling and lubing dudes.. May I suggest ht tp://www.topix.com/forum/world-political-parties/liberal-party-of-canada

Generally the manual will give you a great starting point and following it will keep your gun firing for a long time. When it comes to forum topics, gun lubrication is as bad or worse than oil threads on car/bike forums. For most guns, all you need are a bottle of #9 and a bottle of BF CLP. Some combinations might be marginally better, but the margins are kinda slim.

Don't use Remoil - it was formulated for bolt-action rifles that may get fired 5 times in a year (can't take the heat).

Considering the fact that you just paid the gunsmith a lot of money to "work it over", you probably trust his judgement. Ask him what he would do if it was his gun. He probably knows more than most of us nutz out in cyberland!

Ya I was talking to the owner and I totally forgot to ask questions like that :(. Unfortunately he's in the us so calling is costly

I assume you are talking about Bruce Gray. Check out his site for articles and his new Sig DVD which covers everything you would want to know about maintaining your new Sig. You can also check Sigforum as there is a "sticky" there all about lubrication.

Ya I'm kicking myself for not getting that :(. But that was way back in June and I wasn't thinking about stuff like that. I was thinking about things like "yay gun" and "ouch my wallet hurts" and "I'm so screwed if they deny my rpal".

Sig 226 Enhanced Elite doesn't need much work... great trigger, excellent balance, not sure what else needs to be done to it. Could have purchased a regular 226 and worked it over, saving money.

For cleaning/lube ---> frog lube for the win
Congrats on the purchase

So let me get this straight...You don't use any grease on the rails or anything? It seems a very light product will it stand up to heavy usage? I plan on putting a few hundred rounds a week through this gun.

Your right an i debated over this one for a while. Although in the US the difference was not a huge amount and i really like the look of the EE. Came to just under $900 US shipped (but not imported) for the EE.

As for the work your right it's a great gun. He is smoothing out the action (standard action work, refinishing, that kinda stuff that any gunsmith can do), adding a custom spring kit, changing the way the gun pulls the hammer on the DA so it starts moving the hammer at the beginning of the trigger pull instead of a bit through. So instead of having a really easy start of the trigger and building up to a 10lb pull you have an ultra smooth 6.5lb pull all the way to break (that's what he advertises). He also adds his own custom short reset so it means he had to take the factory SRT out and replace it with a standard trigger (cost me $25 but i get to take the SRT home and i'm sure i'll be able to get rid of it easily enough) and an over travel stop.

I want to shoot this in IPSC an since it has no safety it means hammer down. That first DA pull is a killer (as my friend put it "it's like squeezing oranges). I love shooting the range P226 and i'm really excited to get my tuned up one in my hands and down to the range.

Get some VCI tabs for your gun safe.

Break it down and clean it every so often and do a quick field strip. Clean with Hoppes. Areas such as the rail between slide/frame, feed ramp, firing pin channel, extractor etc. Go to shoppers drug mart and grab a pack of the plastic toothpicks with the little bit of floss on them (always thought they were kind of "saber" shaped) to wrap Hoppes-soaked patches on and clean in the grooves.

Lube up with whatever you like - I use FP-10 on my IPSC open gun and Mobil-1 on my AR15. Have some frog lube coming in...

Clean your barrel by putting the one thing it was designed for through it - a bullet.

If you really want to, wipe it down with a silicone cloth before storage.
