I recently bought a S & W 686 in .357 mag and have begun load development. My first load was 16.5 gr. H 110 ,140 gr. JHP XTP and Wspm primers.Even though this load is reduced it still flattened the primers so i reduced to min. in the Hornady manual of 15.7 grs of H 110 and it still flattened the primers.I bought a factory box of American Eagles in 158 gr.which was o.k. and the primers look good ??.What's the scoop is it the H110,Mag primers, bullets i'am at a lose to explain it.By the way the brass was trimmed to proper lenghth and the crimp wasn't that much so i have no idea whats wrong.Any help would be great.

Try some different primers, CCI's maybe. Perhaps your H110 just doesn't like your 686. I've got a gun that doesn't like red dot.....

Throw one of your bullets on your scale to reconfirm that 140gr. bullet weight. Things have been mislabeled before. 15.6 is max if they're 158-160. Verify your scale as well if you have not already done so. Then try another primer. Good luck.

With the 686 S&W magnum, you have to watch the Hammer Spring tension. If there's not enough, your primers will pop the hammer back and what should have been a dent will look like an "outie" belly button.

I have ceased using Win primers in magnum loads if they are the "new" brass colored type. The cup is too soft and flattens out quickly when even a little pressure is applied. Get some Federals and try them and see if the same signs appear. That should give you some insight.
Carry on!

HOWDY; It could be the gun.
I had a Ruger secuirty six 357 with hot loads were OK. a guy at the range wanted to try them in his Smith wesson 357 so . IT locked the cylinder as the primer flowed back into the fireing pin hole.
Not all guns are created equal some will not take a certin load due to ?????
