i have a $250 trail cam coming my way and would prefer if it didnt go missing one day. has anyone built a strong and secure box for their trail cam to deter theft? what type of lock and chain/cable?

You can buy lockboxes made just for Trail Cams, seen them for sale. Granted though even with that it would only stop the quick stop and grab type thieves. If someone really wanted to steal it they would either cut the chain or the tree down (around here that's what happened to a couple trail cams).

ive seen 2 different styles of store bought boxes and both could likely be busted open with a flat bar and hammer. im looking to build something that is a lot more secure and likely less than half the price.

put up a sign above it saying

steal my $hit and you WILL be shot, I'm NOT a law abiding citizen so therefore my gun CAN NOT be traced, therefore I'm not afraid to shoot you.

PS. do you see me in that bush over there

:ban::ban:

lollollol see what happens then

if anybody takes this advice your as stupid as the sign i just came up with lol

Yeah they like to charge an arm and a leg for the "trail cam lockboxes".

But once again, if someone REALLY wanted to take the trail cam, just cut down the tree and buck up the section the box is attached to and pack it out to open it later. This is what a group of punks around here do every hunting season to the point that no one sets cameras out anymore and the main reason that I haven't purchased one yet.

Granted a lockbox with a rod sunk into the ground or a lockbox too heavy for a person to pack out would work but trying to set them up would almost be impossible.

I always find this strange. If I'm putting a trail cam up won't it be hidden from absolutely everything? The only way I can see someone finding one is if there is snow on the ground and they see your tracks. But by the time there is snow in the area where I hunt I don't need to be doing anymore scouting.

I'm not defending them. I actually find it sickening that guys would actually do this. People are jerk offs.

What I do is I fine a old “dead” tree then peal the bark off the dead tree , then cover the sides of my trail cam with it so it make it real hard to see. So it makes it look like a broken branch in the tree

That is a problem here too. There are higher end cameras that will text every picture to your cell phone........ Might be the way to catch them. By the time they figure out the thing transmits, they'll be caught.
