A friend is looking for a ballpark value on his Model 100 Winchester. I don't know if it's pre or post '64, I suspect post-64.
It's a rifle model, cal .284 Win, cut checkered stock, bluing 95%, wood VG ++. Very low round count, his grandfather bought it new and shot one deer with it. Probably less than a hundred or so rounds through it. Original leather sling on it and a spare mag as well.
He wants the value for interest's sake only and has no intention of selling this treasured heirloom.
I saw the carbine model for sale at GunsAmerica at $2250 U.S., but I find prices at sites in the US to be astronomical compared to here in Canada. Sorry, no pics at this time.

There's a recall on that gun - something about the firing pin I believe. Someone more knowledgeable than me could probably elaborate.

My dad had one in .308 - sold for $500 (scoped) about 8 years ago.

Thanks guys,
I made my friend aware of the firing pin recall and the toll-free number. I realize what people are paying for this rifle in .308, however the .284 is so much scarcer (I would guess maybe 2 or 3 percent of the production) that I expect the price to be much higher. It's just so hard to find a .284 version for sale that I've got nothing to go by. One thing I have noticed...there are more model 100's on the market than there were 20 years ago, and the price for one in .308 is about the same now as then.

Price is dependant on condition. The 284 is worth more than the 308 due to it's "rarity". I'm speculating, but with cut checkering it should be a Pre-64 model, which will bring the price up higher.
As for the firing pin recall, yes there is one. Contact Winchester-Olin in the US. You chould be able to find their 1-800 # somewhere on the web. If they are "out of business" too, shoot me a PM, I have firing pins for the 100.

Thanks, Gunrunner! Where are you at? I'm an ex-Kenora-ite myself. Was up to NW Ont this fall to visit and do a bit of deer hunting.
I had already given my friend the 800 number and some links for the recall....he can do what he likes. I told him my personal advice, if he wants to insure the rifle on its own, would be $800 to $900 to replace it. I realize that may seem a bit high, but try to find a near-mint Model 100 in .284 when you want one.

I have a friend who wanted me to place his mod. 100 308 here, but when I went and looked at it we realized the stock had been shortened by 3/4 of an inch, and not done all that well I figured we have problems selling it. This thread will give me some proof to advise my buddy to lower his $500 price lol

I have a Model 100 in the 284 Win. ,and the resale value is about $850 in exellant condition. The mags for it go for about$75 to $100 each. Your friend would be wise to keep this rifle because for a short action reciever it gives 280 Rem. a run for its money. I have The Model 100 in 243, 308and 284 in both the rifle and carbine. If he needs a spare mag, I have extras. I think 88Man on this forum has a full collection of 100"s and 88"s in all calibers . There was only a total of approx. 275,000 model 100's made. He has one of the rarest calibers. Just a little info for you. Bob

Hey Kilo
The Model 100's were brought out in early 60's and production stopped in the mid 70's.If your buddies 100 has the cut checkering as you say it does means it's a pre 64 for sure and there were'nt many made that year as 1963 was the year the 284 was put out in the 100's as well as the 88's.Being a pre 64 ( if the serial # checks out right ) and in as good as shape as you say it is I would think 1000$ give or take a little would be a wise move to insure it at.I do have the complete set of 100's and 88's ( Thank you for saying that Bob :D ) in both rifle and carbine and pre and post 64 models but it took me over 20 yrs to find them.If you need anymore info just ask and someone else or me will be happy to answer .
