Hi everyone,

After many years of being strictly a rifle owner/shooter I've decided to take the plunge and have applied for my RPAL.

A good friend of mine was asking what gun I want first and I mentioned something in a single action revolver would probably be what I'm after.

Turns out he ended up having a 4 3/4" blued Ruger Blackhawk (new model) in the back of his safe that he'd part with. It's chambered in 45 Colt, has wood grips and a blued Finnish.

It's been fired a lot with cast loads as he said the fellow that owned it before him shot a lot. Bluing has wear on the cylinder and there's a few scuffs here and there from holstering the gun. Bore looks great and it seems to lock up and work as it should.

My friend took the gun on trade many years ago and he's never even fired it. He asked me to figure out what it's worth but being a rifle guy I have no idea?

So what's a well used but mechanically mint black hawk worth these day??

Any help would be awesome as I'd like to pay a fair price as he's a good buddy. Won't be buying it for awhile as I'm sure my RPAL will take some time to come back but figured I'd like to know how much of my allowance money I'll have to save up.☺

Considering the condition and mileage on the gun I would offer $450, you should also consider getting into re-loading...last time I checked factory 45 Colt was north of $ 1.00 a round.

I've gotten a few very nice condition Blackhawks in 45 colt off the EE for $450 or so. Lots of overpriced stuff out there, but you shouldn't let that influence what you offer him

On the really low side $350.00 and on the high side $550.00 As others have stated probably $400.00 to $450.00 will be fair as long as the gun works fine and has no issues.

As one other stated a 45 Colt cartridge may not be the best to start with. A 357 Blackhawk would be a much better choice as you can shoot a lot more cheap 38 special for the same money and they are way easier to find.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Being a rifleman at heart looking into handguns is a whole other ball of wax.

I'd really like a single action to start with but I'll agree that 45 colt isn't my first choice caliber wise. I was thinking 357/38 for the above mentioned reasons.

As for reloading I already load 20 some odd rifle calibers plus 9mm so I'll be OK with adding one more to the list. If I like 45 colt I'll maybe add a 4th press to my bench just for that caliber.

I already cast most of my bullets so I'm thinking I can add a new mold and sizer to my cast tool selection if needs be.

Cactus plains bullets are under $100/k for 45Colt.

I have a 4 gang mold that I'm not currently using because my time is worth more than the slaves wage I make in casting pistol bullets (along with collecting and refining scrap lead and hours spent in front of a lubesizer) in order to undercut the cost of commercial cast.

IF you intend to shoot black powder I'd go with 44-40 instead. 45colt brass is thick and does not seal very well in the chambers. Cases come out sooty and you get a lot of blowback into the action. 44-40 brass is like tinfoil in comparison.

Oh....yes under $500 on a well used Blackhawk. For me the shorty barrel makes it even less desirable. The 4.something inch guns are favoured for quick draw, but the aesthetics are damned ugly.
