Price Check: Remington 721

Hello Fellas,

Looking to purchase a Remington 721 and trying to establish the going rate for one. I know there has been one kicking around the EE, but that is the only one that I have seen for sale in a long time. The particular rifle I am looking at shows as follows:

Rifle: 30-06 chambering, decent lumber (some dings but no cracks, high comb I think), good bore and crown (may have seen corrosive ammo when new but doesn't show it), metal ~75% (bottom metal bare), missing rear sight (front sight intact). Smooth action, no extraction problems or functionality issues of any kind. Trigger as creepy as one can expect from a 50 year old gun, but breaks very crisp relative to everything else I own.

Accessories: Cheapo Tasco 3-9x40 scope, one piece bases and dovetail style rings, slip-on pad over the old aluminum recoil number.

To all those with comments about this thread being useless without pics, sorry none available.

Anyhow, being the cheap bugger that I am, I’d like to know what you’d consider a good deal on this rifle. I’m aware that these will never be collector items, so we’re just talking value for the money here relative to other new/used hunting rigs based on accuracy and functionality.

You want to hope there are no extraction issues, because obtaining replacement 721 extractors can be problematic. Trigger is adjustable. A 721 is the direct ancestor of the 700, rather plain in comparison. You don't mention the price being asked; I'm assuming that the rifle isn't the one in the EE. A used Tasco scope adds little to the value. This is a 50 year old used plain vanilla rifle.
 
If you are talking about Beater's 721 in 30-06, I have handled it and almost bought it. I found it to be a very solid and usable rifle. (I wanted a BRNO) The trigger broke clean and eberythign appeared where it should be. Just my view if it helps.
 
I owned one for a few years, be VERY careful the the rear floor plate screw is not overtightened, you WILL crack the stock right at the neck. They had some issues with the design IIRC. Otherwise it was an awesome rifle and very accurate. I also had the extractor disappear on me, Dlask put in a Sako type extractor and it was good to go.
 
I feel they are worth no more than a used 700 ADL, a bit less actually as the stocks are not built for scope use and the action was the predecessor of the 700.
 
The question is, what would be a good deal for that rifle.

The answer is, from somebody that has been doing some horse-trading from time to time, anything less than $400 would be an excellent value for the buyer. If I owned the one you describe, it would be at $500 on a gun show table and I would not haggle much lower than $475 for it.

And these are really very good rifles, as people have mentioned.

With ~ 75% blue left I wouldn't pony up more than $425 for that rifle.

A cheap scope adds nothing to a rifle deal for me. I'd sooner the seller take the cheap scope off anyway & just sell me the rifle with the bases/rings.

Doug says he wouldn't haggle much lower than $475 but I bet you could beat him down to $425... :p
 
Much appreciate the replies, Gents. Just to clarify, the rifle in question is not Beater’s or anyone else’s in the EE. Also, the thread is not in any way meant to comment on the fairness of his price. I simply don’t have anything to reference to for the going rate, so your guys’ comments are very useful. Steeleco, what’s the ballpark cost of the Sako extractor conversion should this one need it?
 
I own a 721 in .270 win.and its a great rifle and accurate.It's one of the first ones and was made Dec. 1948.I would think a price of anywhere around $450 to $500 would be good.I paid $70 used but that was about 35 years ago.There was a concern with having to take the safety off to unload the gun and some had fired when doing this so make sure it has been modified to not let that happen.
