ran across a Sako L61R in .270 like new in box with paper work-10 rounds fired.Sako rings etc.
I searched a bit but couldn't find a comparable iron to figure a price range.

sorry no pics or serial...

Any idea on an approximate value for this iron?

thnx

Is there a nice design pattern on the bottom of the floor plate? If so you have a deluxe Sako. I have an unfired one of these in 25-06 with very nice wood.

This gun you have found could go for any where between $1100.00 to $1400.00, depending if it is a deluxe.

A new model 85 Sako now is close to $2000.00.

If you had that same rifle for sale now, would you be selling it for $750.00?
Used Tikka's are going for nearly that much money, now. FS

sold it in December....an L61R is only worth what someone will pay for it...I prefer an AV myself...better stock design....I've owned at least three of each to see there isn't much difference...and anyone who would pay $750 for a used Tikka deserves a used Tikka......

but, as new in the box with rings will be worth over $1000 to someone.....

I'm with Rembo on this one. The older L61Rs don't bring the same $$$ the newer ones do. Williams had a L61R in 30-06 with a 2x7 Leupold VIII on it ( I think it was) for $899 for awhile before it sold. It was in excellent condition.

I wonder why the older ones would be worth less? My mid 60s, with the third lug, is the smoothest action of any rifle I have seen. Bar none!

I don't think they are worth any less...just maybe not more than a comparable AV. The stock design of the L61R is rather dated with it's sharp lines around the cheekpiece and squared fore-end shape,..the AV is more rounded and appears less 1960ish. The third lug is always mentioned when comparing the two...I'll bet that by the time you need the third lug it's usually too late....there are differences in the bolt shrouds...the L61R is more functional looking with less extra metal, the AV's is well done with the machined enclosed shroud with the machined checkering to match the top of the reciever....they both look fine to me. The L61R's one piece floorplate might be better than the AV's welded two piece, which makes it one piece... but they are both hard to fault compared to the aluminum junk on some other rifles.

and IMHO...neither bolt is a smooth as a 75 or 85....but the two lug Sakos "sound" better when they lock up......and we know how important smooth bolts and that bank vault like sounds is...:D

Every time I open my mouth here I seem to get in trouble, so I'll just say that I agree with you 100% and leave it at that.:D

I don't think there's been a SAKO (and precious few other rifles) made since that compares to the L61R.

I mentioned the third lug, more to distinguish the model, than to say anything about its strength.
Here is what I meant about the smoothest action I have ever seen. Open the floor plate, so there is no drag on the bolt. Lift the bolt handle, with the rifle horizontal, in the shooting postition. Now, slowly raise the muzzle. I don't know the degrees of lift are, but the muzzle will be not very high, until the bolt slides smoothly and evenly, toward the rear. It looks pretty, the bolt just moves slowly and so evenly, all the way to the back.
I tried that on a two lug and it wouldn't do it, at all the same.

Edited to say that my rifle is a 270.
