A buddy has a Model 1894 Winchester made in 1902 with 26" octagonal barrel in 38-55. The rifle is in very good shape, he has own it since the late 70's and it works fine. Less than 200 rds were fired in it. Bluing is rubbed off in front of the lever and around the muzzle(all the normal places) the wood has some nicks and very small scratches. This rifle will be going on the EE soon.

I have one in the same vintage, but round barrel. I've seen the octo barrels listed from $395-$895 depending on condition. That doesn't help much...:D

If the finish is as good as you say $1000 easy and I don't think I'd sell it for that. Most old Winchester's of that vintage have gray receivers as the blue didn't stick very good to the old actions.

CONDITION IS EVERYTHING!!!

Following this as I have a vintage 1900 same rifle but round barrel. Shoots very well. I am told the round barrels are more rare for this vintage. Mines a tack driver with factory ammo but looking to load cast.

All of the ones I have seen including mine are full mag. The round barrel is heavy enough-cannot imagine carrying a hex barrel a lot or far. Seems to me 26in barrel is standard. FYI for some fun google 38-55 and look at all the sites that come up. Almost as much interest as the Savage 99s...

the round barrel is more rare than the octagon x3 times. i had a half mag 38-55 round from 1907 that sold for $650. even rarer conformation.

Condition is becoming everything for valuation. Lots of the older stuff coming on the market lately.
