I'm looking at a couple of rifles that are up for sale near my home. One is an M1 Carbine manufatured by Universal, the other is a Lee Enfield Long Branch No4 Mk1. The M1 is in good shape, and the Lee Enfield is in GREAT shape. Roughly, how much are these two rifles worth??

I had a universal carbine about 25 years ago, at that time new, it was about $350. Of course it has gone up in price, and IMHO, if in excellent condition, about $400 to $450 now. I had problems with it jamming because I had used the commerical 30 ammo, with soft lead round nose. I sold the carbine and told the buyer about the problem, and included the ammo with the sale. He told me later that the carbine worked fine, but with surplus FMJ ammo. I am not an expert but thought I should pass this on to you. It would be a great gun for plinking, almost no recoil and fun.

Universals come in two models. Early and Late. The Early models are ok. It was a close copy of the issue carbine. Not many around though.
The Late models, two return springs, a toggle for the bolt hold open and a poorly made, stamped, op handle, are junk. Universal thought they could improve the design. They didn't. Except for mags, no milsurp parts will fit. The op handles tend to break too. $70US to replace.
"...hands on an Enfield P-17..." Epp's is listing a Winchester made one in 'Good' condition for $499.
