Hey there. I’m looking at picking up another Winchester 1895, I came across someone selling a pretty rough example of one in 30-40 Krag. Normally im all for keeping old rifles as they are, but this one isn’t winning awards anytime soon and 30-40 isn’t growing on trees anymore. From my understanding the 30-40 rifles and the .303 rifles share most internal components, the main difference being the barrel. Does anybody have a rough idea of just how much it would cost to have a new 20” .303 barrel made up for one of these guns? Thanks guys!

30-40 ammunition can be almost impossible to find these days.

It's still possible to find brass for reloading though and in a pinch, you can use 303Brit cases to fireform into 30-40 cases.

If you don't hand load, getting into the 30-40 Krag cartridge often means the rifle is a safe queen for lack of ammo.

Basically, you're looking at the cost of buying a barrel blank and getting it turned down to the profile you need, then threaded and mounted on your action. You will likely have to purchase a reamer as well, because there aren't many smiths around who will have one in their tooling bins.

Might cost more than the project is worth to you. Maybe look around for a take off barrel. They do show up once in a while. Won't be cheap either.

There may be differences in the magazine.
A No. 4 Lee Enfield barrel can be used as a starting point. Less expensive than buying a new blank.
In addition to threading and chambering and making the extractor cut, the forend must be fitted and a lug installed on the barrel for the forend retaining screw. Refinishing as required.
You are looking at several hours of gunsmith time.

I know that a friend had Jason Spencer at Gunco rebarrel a '95 in .303 for him. A take-off barrel was used, but I do not know the all-in cost.
