Price for used ar-15

I am new to the forum, and I have been reading a lot of posts by you guys.
I am not too sure if this is right question to ask here but it relates to AR-15
I am looking around and checking out the prices of various models of AR-15 and additional accessories they can have. My choice was Ar-15 either in 16 or 20 inch barrel with adjustable stock and removable handle to add scope for target shooting,.. One of my friends have met a guy who has number of ar-15 in his possession, and he is looking to sell one of them from his collection. the rifle is in very good condition, it is about 10-12 years old Colt Ar-15 A2, 20in with fixed stock, and with fixed handle, 1 x 30 round magazine, 1 x 5 round magazine, scope mounting rail arm that mounts on handle, plus some odd additional items for target shooting, no scope, no cleaning tools, etc, he is looking for that rifle around 1600-1700 cdn, I was kind of surprised for the price, I was hoping less then 1k for it, since you can buy new model for that much or bit more with additional accessories, I was wondering if it is worth it, if I should skip it, and go for what I was aiming for get new one that will have rail to mount scope and any additional things.. or should I offer him a price, but what price I should offer ?
 
Depending on condition I'd say $1200 would be more than fair. It sounds like you don't want a fixed stock or the 20" barrel and that you'd like a A4 flattop instead of the A2 so down the road you can throw some optics on.

This gun does not really sound like it is for you.
 
Depending on what comes with it, a complete upper will run you anywhere from the $500-$550 mark up to $900 and beyond depending on make and extras.

As for your friend's AR, it doesn't sound like what you're looking for to begin with. As for price, a standard AR-15 in 20" A2 configuration regularly sells in the EE for around $1100-$1300 depending on condition, make and extras.

Unless your friend drops his asking price considerably and offers you a smokin' deal, I'd probably keep looking. There are some great deals to be had in the EE on AR stuff, there is usually room for some bargaining to boot and you end up with the rifle that you wanted in the first place! Your other option is to give Armseast, Wolverine Supplies, Questar, etc...a call and order yourself a brand spankin' new rifle made to your specification with all the extras. More expensive than buying used, but you end up with what you wanted from the start.
 
You can put a scope on both the flat top and fixed carry handle models. There's mounting hardware for both versions. Granted, the scope sits a fair bit higher on the fixed carry handle version. But some people seem to like it!
