price info on peabody martini (turkish)

bought on a whim at recent moncton gunshow ........

got a peabody martini 1874 , chambered in 7.65 argentine..outside is military condition full stock ect, bore is very crappy ....photos avaialable any idea on value ...................?

pre ww1 gun a copy of the brit martini then sleeved down to the above calibre ........by thr turks as 2nd line military issue......

They must have changed the extractor as well. That rifle was designed for a rimmed cartridge. Yeah I know, you already know this. I've only seen one other Martini converted to shoot a rimless cartridge, it had a split ectractor with a telescoping hinge/spring. Worked well.

yes it is by providence tool , a copy of the brit martini, wich later on in life was then sleeved down by the turks into a 7.65 argentine ........

was told same info on being rare, but since i posted on other gunsites similar to this ( were i could easy post pics ..... ) most those folks seem on ide its worth my cost and most likely a bit more ......

I have one of those as well. Beautiful work on them for the most part. I paid $250 for mine last year and it stayed on the sellers table for two days. Mine is in 303 Brit. Shoots very well. Surprisingly, the chamber is tight and true and the headspace is bang on.

i imagine it came out of some former part of the ottoman empire and not turkey proper since it escaped the rebuilding to 8x57.

i assume you enquired on US forums, my take on the US vs CAN gun markets, common stuff is cheaper there, while rarer stuff is cheaper here. it might be gold to a collector in the US and might fetch a high price there (especially since it would be an antique down there), but up here i think $300 is on the high end in the condition you describe. my advice if you don't want it, try to export it.

it would be interesting to know how many of these conversions were done, IIRC the turkish contract with providence was for hundreds of thousands of rifles, but during the service time of these rifles the ottomans were on the losing end of MANY wars. i imagine there are still quite a few floating around arabia and wouldn't be surprised if they show up in afghanistan as well.
