I'm looking to pick up a nice plinking gun in an affordable calibre.

I already have a 308 for shooting deer etc that require a decent size round. But that $%#( is expensive. Hence my desire to buy a nice plinking gun for practice)

I've been looking at prices for 223/556 to test the waters and was surprised to see that I wouldn't be saving any money compared to the cheap norinco 308 ammo I shoot.

Is this a temporary situation? How much is bulk 223 typically?

And if anyone has a recommendation for an accurate bolt gun in a cheap calibre?

Getting any center fire ammo other than 7.62x39 for much under 50 cents a round ain't happening these days. 7.62x54R maybe.

International shooting supplies customer appreciation sale had PMC 62 gr green tip for about .49 cents taxes in.

the last 3 crates of 7.62x39mm cost me .175$ a round it cheap Chinese corrosive but it does the job and work well in my cz858 and xcr-l or sks

otherwise 7.62x54r can be found generally around .25-.35 $ a round

Personally, I get bored of .22 pretty quick
And I refuse to pay over 52 cents per round of .223
I usually wait for sales

A 9mm carbine isn't too bad at about 32 cents per shot but there's also larger rifle rounds available for less money

Otherwise 7.62x54R at 26 cents is pretty good, and also 7.62x39. I just hate cleaning the corrosive stuff
CanAm has noncorrosive 7.62x39 for about 25 cents per round. That's what I'd use personally.

My local shop has cheap Russian made .223 for between 8 and 9 dollars for a box of 20 about 90% of the time. So between 40-45c a round.

Usually Barnaul or MFS.

so i keep hearing about how this stuff is bad - anyone with any actual experience care to share their knowledge?

in the same boat and if barnaul/mfs is the only affordable bulk available - wondering what the actual downside is, if any...

I just bought a dedicated 22LR upper for my AR's to reduce costs and still use my AR's regularly.
I doubt we'll see the price of ammo go down, maybe a sale occasionally.
I found a receipt when I was packing for my last move, 1000 223 was $175 if I remember correctly. Made me wish I'd bought a lot more ;)

I have run over 2000 russian ammo down my Type 97, all are accurate, the steel core makes sparks shoot out the muzzle (spectacular light show).

I havent had any problems with them. Barnaul is laquered case, which can melt in the chamber requiring a scrubbing but other than that I have had no issues.
