Hey: With the recent increase of the Canadian dollar, has anyone heard of the price of target loads coming down?

I recall the price being a lot cheaper back in Nov 07 when we had a Canadian dollar @ par with the US dollar.

Currently paying avg. of $72.00 in Ontario for a flat. :(

What are your thoughts or comments?

My thoughts are it will be a hell of a lot slower to come down in price than it did to go up.

Prices for almost all products in this industry were set from where the dollar is and was back in January and early Feb, and will remain the same for all ammo until next years pricing is done for 2010. FS

Pretty much the way I see it too.

Distributors and retailers were taking it on the chin when the dollar started going up last fall, and I can't honestly believe anyone's ammunition sales have increased from New Year's till now. From September 2007 till July of 2008, almost a year, our dollar hung around par with the US $.

Come January '09, the US $ was $1.24 CDN and by March it was $1.31. The same firearm last June ('08) that retailed for $ 739.99, is now on average +/- $ 919.99 this year, a 22 - 25 % increase over the year previous. Manufacturers passed on increases in October, January and some again, in March.

Even at $ 1.08277 right now, neither distributors nor retailers will be in any kind of a big hurry to reduce prices. Once distributors lower their prices for incoming inventory ( yup, fall [2010] booking orders taken next January/February ) - retailers will then start to lower prices. By Spring 2010 you may see some relief, dependant on what the exchange is in January.

There are more than just exchanges rates to consider. Commodity prices, particularly the price of lead, has an impact on shotshell prices.

When lead prices rose reloaders felt the pinch immediately while factory prices only saw an increase when lead stocks needed replacing. It will take some time for the recent reductions to work their way through the factory system.

I agree with BB and FS that shell prices will stay about where they are for another year or so.

Absolutely ! Thankfully lead has come down in price considerably from where it was, but the days of $ 20 a bag shot for reloading are, I think, long gone.

Years ago, I bougt a ton (80 bags) of bagged lead shot for $ 6 a bag. I kinda wish I'd bought 10 tons !

Good feedback

Thanks for the feedback and advice.

Pretty much reinforced what I was thinking.

Summer is here and ATA events are heating up.

Going to be burning thru the target load pretty fast in the next months, just looking for confirmation on if I should buy 20-25 flats @ once or buy in smaller qty's of 5 flats.

Don't want to make a big purchase and then turn around and see a price drop.

Lucky in Southern Ont we have some choice in who we purchase from.

(Almost makes living in Ont. (with traffic issues ) worthwhile :))

Cheers

In your neck of the woods, Humasons would be the best bet, I would think.

Thought Dan would have been more competitive than that.

Dan is one of the least competitive guys I know of, his prices are bordering on outrageous. That, and he never has anything in stock. :(

You could also buy a case of factory shells, (when a case was 500 shells) for $60.00. Then the Spanish, French, and Italian shells came out, and those could be had for $35.00 a case. It'd be nice to have saved a few of them too.

Almost gone. I paid $26 when I stocked up in April

And you would be correct sir.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade....but.....I have some good news.

It appears we are seeing price reductions quicker than we all thought was possible.

I was into a local Mississauga sporting goods retailer today.

Last week price of Winchester trap was $65.00 :kickInTheNuts:.....today....it is.........$60.00/flat. :dancingbanana:

Happy days are here again....:)

We should start a post on who has the best price on trap load..

Is anyone seeing Trap at less the $60.00/flat?:runaway:
