And we all know that the problem lies with NRCANN and their lists of approved ammo, packaging restrictions and $1000 per item testing right?

I'm hoping this is something we can start working on our new govt to correct.

These regulations were clearly part of the effort by our dearly departed Libs to push Canadians away from recreational fireartms ownership and use, much like the onerous fees and non-safety related firearms regulations.

What ministry does the department that looks after the importation of ammo belong to? The new Minister?

They have so much 8mm Mauser surplus ammo in the States!!! It is so cheap, I have thought about trying to do the export/import thing on 5000 rounds before. With the import fees, etc you would still come out WAY ahead.
 
Steve, Is the 8mm in question on the NRCAN approved ammo list? That's where the problems often pop up.

Also, it's not inexpensive finding shippers willing to move ammo cross-border. If it's bulk packed ammo it is considered haz-mat for US shippers, unlike new manufacture ammo. The US dealer would have to be licensed for exporting and agree to go through the paperwork to make it happen/. Many won't look at less than a container load for export. If they're already moving lots of ammo in the US, it might not be worth their while to go through the export process with you when they could just sell it domestically.

For a dealer wanting to bring in the same ammo, by the truckload, they might find out that the ammo isn't listed and not approved for sale in Canada, or if it is it all needs to be repackaged in individual boxes, with bi-lingual labelling, etc.

I think the issues with ammo import and sale in this country give me red-arse more than any of the other regs, so they appear to be working as desired.

How hard would it be for an individual to bring back the 5000rd maximum as allowed by Canada Customs? Canada Customs is not the problem - your allowed up to 5000rd centerfire. THe problem is the new U.S. export laws. Anyone know what paperwork you need from the U.S. side to export it for personal use - does it cost alot to apply for an individual? I used to bring back ammo for my own use before 9/11 and it was no problem.
 
Ok, now I understand. I'm cried out even before I got to sleep tonight, so maybe I'll just go drive off a cliff now.

Hmmmm......I wonder if we contacted one of the surplus bulk ammo sellers to see if they would be willing to process Canadian orders? Perhaps they could fill a niche market? Not sure how many of us CGN'ers or other Canadians would buy ammo though.

I guess the good thing about high ammo prices here is that you have less chance of buying a gun that has a shot out barrel.

Yeah, another obstacle for sure. I did check the ammo list and most of the stuff that is selling cheap down south isn't on the list unfortunately.
 
If your buying ammo for individual use, not resale (like a retailer), would your ammo still need to be on the approved list? When did the Government start this need to approve ammo?

Just wondering because I used to bring back Greek, German, Czech, and Swedish surplus ammo before 9/11. Customs only seemed concerned about "How many rounds? Is it for your personal use? Ok, your tax and duty comes out to so and so. Thank you." I never had any difficulty. I sometimes brought back the maximum full limit of 5000rds of centerfire. I tell you, it felt good to have all that cheap ammo for the ol'milsurps. :)
 
I believe to bring it into the country period, it has to be on the approved list. I had the list, but just deleted it. I am sure someone else has the link to it.
