I am comparing some Norma .308 against some Ingman brass I am cleaning up and I've drilled out the primer hole to the correct diameter (Igman is way too small and crimped I think). After I clean the primer pocket I check the depth. On the Norma, the depth is pretty consistent at 0.127" to 0.130". The Ingman is much deeper ranging from 0.133" to 0.142".

My question is is primer depth a safety concern, and how big a consistency concern is it? I couldn't find primer depth measures in my reloader manual.

In an article about the 500 S&W i found this: "SAAMI allows .125" to .132" for large rifle pockets"

From the CCI site they give the recommended primer seating depth.

Q: What it the recommended seating depth for CCI primers?
A: We recommend that, for maximum sensitivity, primers be seated .003 to .005 inches below the case head.

The only problen I can see with deep primer pockets is that you might get light strikes on your primers since the firing pin only protrudes so far out of the bolt on any rifle.

Thanks for the info... I never thought of it from that point of view (light hit). I'll put a primer in on one of the deep ones and measure it and fire it and see what the imprint is. If its light and an issue, I'll dump that brass...
