So i'm on my deck enjoying the sun and pulling some bullets from some mistakes i've had reloading, using a bullet puller on a piece of wood. and bang a primer goes off :eek:, shot strait up, but havent found it yet maby never will. it did'nt faze me but i was shocked becouse i remember when i first started reloading, hmm what happens if it goes off, well i found out, primer went shooting up, bullet was still in the case and the powder unburnt..

I dont think it would be much more exciting then that if the powder lit, well i'm hoping.

you know 1 in 100, pretty good odds it does'nt happen much.
 
I take it you speak of the hammer like, kinetic bullet puller?

Which primers were you using? Brand and type please.

I hope you were wearing glasses while pulling bullets. You now know you should always wear safety glasses when you handload too. I could never stress on safety glasses enough while shooting AND handloading ammunition.
 
I often wondered if a primer could ever go off while using a kinetic bullet puller. Just to be on the safe side, I always wear safety glasses. Now I'm glad that I have been doing that. I am really surprised that the powder didn't ignite. That could have had much worse results.
Thanks for sharing that, confirms the need for safety glasses while doing any kind of reloading/unloading activity.
 
yep i was useing the hammer,kinetic bullet puller
primers i'm using are Federal 100 but does not mean it the same kind that went off. these were a stock pile of mistakes, that makes it sounds like i mess up a lot but its just a over time thing
and I always where some kind of glasses, mostly safty glasses even my sunglasses are safty glasses, found a pair i really like and they were cheap so i bought a bunch becouse i loose and scrach them all the time.
I havent had a primer go when i'm reloading (yet that is) is it common, i've only heard of it once from someone i know that reloads thousands more then i do. and i reload thousands 9mm a year

oh and a little note. i tend not to stand above anything that may just go boom.
and yet i still stand behind my gun when it goes boom :runaway:

I dont think it would have been worse that what happend. after it happend i looked at the puller and i think its got enough space by the case ( where the little thingy holds the case) for gases to escape and also since theres nothing holding the primer in place it pops out and that provides more release.

but thats only my two cents.

Yeah, the anvil in the primer had enough spring that maybe with a loose primer pocket shot the primer into the air before the powder could catch a spark.

Man, you must have been smacking them really hard on that 2x4. How much of a crimp was there?

Primers don't commonly go off while priming, or pulling bullets. I think it's quite a freak situation if one does go off, but hey, if it can, it will at the worst possible time. Yes? :)
 
I must have pulled at least a thousand by now with my old hammer bullet puller. Heavy crimped stuff that I had to beat the snot out of too. I've never had an issue, and never had a primer go off.
I think you just got a sensitive primer.
 
If the powder Ignited I doubt it would have been a serious issue. I would imagine the bullet puller manufacturer thought of this potential issue for liability reasons.
