Hey folks just getting into reloading and I'm starting with my .223 I'm looking to reload Hornady Vmax 55 Grain bullets and been looking at primers. Remington 7.5 small rifle was quite popular in reloading forums but they aren't really around in Canada. So what would you folks suggest for a quality, reliable primer for a 223 bolt? I doubt I'll be buying another 223 as I really like my vangard and figured it would be a good caliber to step into reloading for.

So far locally I can get Federal and Campro small rifle primers and I've read hit and miss with Federal.

Thanks everyone for your input!

As a new reloader, primers are the least of your issues. Optimizing powder, bullet weight, and to a lesser degree COAL matter. Also, keep meticulous notes in a log book.

With ball powder like Win 748 I always ran small CCI rifle magnum primers in my .223's Match or Benchrest for those chasing accuracy.

Any primer you can buy a lot of. You don't want to be changing primers all the time.

With a light bullet like the 55gr, a ball powder will do better with a magnum primer or a standard Winchester. Winchester primers are made for ball powder. Ball powder is harder to ignite, so a hot primer is desirable.

Not all primers are the same:

Don’t know where you got your info on Federal primers but they are good to go. I’ve used 10’s of thousands of them and have never had a problem.

I will second the above - I have been using Federal Small Rifle primers - #205 - in the .223 and other small rifle primer pockets for a number of years. No issues with them at all that I remember - but all were single shot or bolt action - I do not own any semi-auto centre-fire rifles, so performance might be different with them? I think Federal makes a heavier jacket primer - maybe mil-spec - less sensitive to "slam fires", I understand, in some semi-auto - but I have never used them.

Thinking about what I just wrote - is likely that I use Fed 205 because the store had some when I was buying small rifle primers - and I have not run out yet - is probable that I bought several thousand at that time. Performance has been just fine - so I have had no reason to look for or to try other brands. I guess that means that I do not know if the loadings would be "better" or "worse" with something else.

I’ve had good luck with Federal primers, though they can be a bit soft, so use care putting them in. You can never go wrong with CCI.
