I went to the range this weekend to stretch my mosins legs. Had one round not go off, primer forced the bullet into the rifling but the powder did not burn. Anyone heard of that before? New brass, 150gr 308 bullet, h414 powder some of which was packed into a plug behind the stuck bullet. I shook the casing & it poured out. Speaking of mosins, anyone load 7.62x54r with black powder? I am getting a early one & would like to duplicate the original loading. Thanks for any help you can offer.

So how do you get the bullet out of the bore? Just push it back into the chamber?

Thats a new one either the Primer flash hole was plugged or your powder was wet, damp or mentioned before Contaminated!
Did you try any more loads Possible bad primer?

I've never had this happen with a rifle round but have had it happen with Winchester primers both in reloads and AA target loads. The powder was fine because it worked in other reloads and there was definitely powder in the factory loads.
With the factory loads the wad was jammed halfway up the barrel. In the reloads the wad barely made it out of the crimp. Definitely faulty primers.

I can't think of anything that would have contaminated the powder & it was stored in the same ziplock as the other reloads. I just can't figure how the prime had enough energy to push the bullet out but not ignite the powder. I got the bullet out with a brass tip on my range cleaning rod, thankfully it was a .308 & not a .312 so it came out pretty easy.

Contaminated powder set aside, I can see a .308" bullet that is not sufficiently held by the case's neck tension which is usually designed for a .311" bullet.
Perhaps a magnum primer would have been in order with H-414 which is on the slow side.
Maybe a debris has lodged in the flashhole while tumbling, too.

H414 is a ball powder. Quite often, magnum primers are recommended for ball powder.
