Primers for 300 Win Mag

Went to Bass Pro today and bought 1lb of H4831 for $32.39 and 100 Hornady Interlock 180Gr bullets for 36.99. 1000 CCI Large Rifle BR2 primers... $71.90??? Needless to say I did not purchase the primers but wow I was expecting $43 not $72. They had other primers for 300WM but they were $60 and $50 for the cheapest. What primers would you suggest for these bullets and powder?? Would it be cheaper to use smaller bullets and different powder because I don't really need 180Gr, I could get some 125Gr bullets. Again Thanx for the help!!
 
WSS sells CCI primers for $34/1000 (maybe not the BR-2 ones, though) and Winchesters are around $42/1000 (I think, I don't use them). I use CCI 250's (large rifle magnum) in my .338 Win Mag with no problems, you should be fine with them in your .300.

H4831, in 300 WinMag quantities, doesn't need magnum primers to light; but if you decide to use them, work-up the loads from the get-go, don't just substitute them in.

What are you planning to shoot?
I ask because 125 grain and 180 grain bullets aren't really interchangeable for most uses.
 
I have been using CCI large rifle magnum primers in my 300 WM without any problem what so ever. I might change powder depending on what bullet and what application, but I always use magnum primers. X2 on WSS for the best pricing, lately there has been a decent supply of primers at the gunshows, might try that also?
 
I will be punching paper from 1 to 500 yards with these rounds.
I think I will head down to WSS and get some CCI 250's.

You don't really need magnum primers for H4831, as it is an extruded powder. For ball powder it would be a good idea. Here is an article on large rifle primers that you may find interesting.

The BR-2 is the same primer as the CCI 200, but just with more quality control. So it may be preferred for target shooting, but you pay for it.
 
br2 stands for BENCH-REST 2- specially made for that end of the sport- same as match brass, match bullets, etc- as to whether they're THAT much better is debateable
 
I bought some CCI #250 from WSS but next time it will be ATRS. They rebarreled my MG4A6 and did a bang up job so I would rather spend a little more money on a good company then wait another 20 mins in line at WSS. Any one know if they sell powder?
