Primers sticking to decapping pin?

Hey all,

I'm having occasional issues with reloading 9mm on my Lee Pro 1000 (don't start, mine seems to be one of the better ones and I have it dialed in)...

I get the odd case that comes out with the spent primer still in place. Very rarely I detect the fault on the priming up-stroke and pull the un-primed case out over top of a fresh primer that obviously failed to seat. usually I don't notice the slightly shorter stroke of the arm, the fresh primer gets swept off the priming pin or drops back down and is primed into the next case. This seems to only happens with once fired AE/FC cases primed with a silver primer. My best guess is that the primer is getting stuck to the de-priming pin and lightly seated back in the case. It then advances to the priming station and is fully seated by the fresh primer below it. As a result the feel of the arm is identical to a proper prime cycle and the top out of the arm is so close to full up that I rarely notice it.

I'm using an RCBS Carbide sizing/de-priming die with the de-priming pin set as far down as I can before the threaded pin carrier bottoms out on the base of the case. The primers are getting fully pressed out about 2/3 stroke and from what I can see encounter no obstructions once free of the case.

The tip of my de-priming pin is fairly rounded and I wonder if the FC primer anvils are slightly different than other brands and wedging on to my pin?

Anyone run into this before or tried profiling there pins differently for smooth operation? I think I'm going to try and slim down my pin a bit and see if the problem goes away...

Buy Redding dies, throw away RCBS ones. Problem solved.

Had the same problem with the RCBS 9mm die set, Ended up taking the decap pin out of the die, chucking it in the cordless drill and giving it a good polish with a piece of Scothbrite cleaning pad, seems like the new pins are just the right shape to stick in the primer cup and cause your problem, I have also found after a few 1000 rounds the pin gets debris built up on it and I have to give it a quick cleanup as well.

Had an other pin I needed to touch up with a fine file to change the profile to slightly more rounded as well.

Hope this helps out.:)

Kim

Thanks Kim,

I just gave the pin a slight taper and reshaped the end a bit.

I popped out a few FC primers and sure enough they seem to have a deeper taper to the anvil. I tried manually tapping out a primer and pulling the case out with a #19 shell holder, the primer stuck to the pin and re seated lightly in the shell when the die was removed... after the re-shaping it falls free :D

The rockers in my Chevy van have a few rust holes... Guess its time to scap my fully paid off van and buy a Mercedes Sprinter passenger van... It's only ~$47K (4X the Chevy) and will likely never rust...

You may need to look at your die set up in your press. You shouldn't have to have your decapping pin screwed out so far as to not have any adjustment left.

Is there a chance the pin had been broken and therfore shorter than normal?

No, the pin is OK. I just ran it all the way down to be sure the primer was getting pushed out early on in the stroke... I'm prepping a batch of FC cases and will try a run of ~100 to see if the problem has been solved by reshaping.
