what is the deal on primers......how does one go about determining which primer is best suited for your hunting enviroment,or your load...hunting rigs, not benchrest....do you just buy a couple brands and try that way, pretty much like powders, or is there a bit of a method to it?

I'm loading for a 300wtby......I hunt from +20 to -20....just wondering how much weather plays a factor,if any.....are there hotter primers and such or ???

apparently, Winchester WLRM magnum primers are the 'hottest' on the market, so I have read

Federal 215M GOld Medal match primers can be very consistent, which helps accuracy

Ball powder is often used with Magnum primers. The load books also state this. In most cases In most cases Mag primers are fine where Large rifle primers are used. CAUTION , any time you swap out elements , like case/primer/bullet please revert back to step one, ie starting loads
Oh , Magnum cases Take Magnum Primers , for your Weatherby, Fed 215 Mag primers are in order. Gun shows often have great deals on primers. Weather is not as much a problem as Altitude change , extreme cold would,

I now use only federal primers after having two cci primers fail to fire several years ago. Those were the only primer failures that I have ever witnessed.

I use mostly Winchester primers followed by Federal and CCI.I usually try different primers for my accuracy loads it's the only way to know which one your rifle likes. The powder is a bigger factor for cold weather than the primer, it will dictate which primer to use.

Test driving more than one brand is the only sure way to evaluate which one works best for your gun.
Try to stay away from harder to find components in your area.

all my hunting loads get fed 215. you never know when your rounds are going to be sub zero for days on end. i'm willing to give up a little accuracy to know when i pull the trigger they will fire. i have never had a fed 215 not fire.

Not true. Try Standard large rifle primers also. Sometimes the non-magnum primers give better accuracy. Try different primers.

I use a variety of primers in my rifles all with pretty good results. I have had misfires with CCI 250s though, but they work sooooo well in my .300 Win Mag I can't bring myself to write them off for ever.

As a h/gun shooter I use Federal small pistol ONLY for my revolvers since my revolvers have been breathed on & Federal is pretty thin skinned.

Now in semi-auto the hammer drop is heavy so anything like CCI, Winchester, Remington to Federal are used.

Do any of you guys use the Federal primers with the Lee hand primer? I don't see how it would be different than with any other primer?

I do. Not a problem. Federal primers tend to be a little softer than others. Unless you are doing something really stupid, I can't for the life of me see one going off during any process in any equipment that does not set off other primers.

If wrong, it will be the second time in my life......:D
