Princess Auto - 9 pc Roll Pin Punch Set - $5.99 (until Jul 27th)

Thanks for the tip Overkill! Bought some and they work great for my needs. Not sure why some people where complaining about the quality. It's a $6 investment. What do u expect?
 
my understanding of what makes a good roll pin punch is a concave face of a hair under the diameter of the hole

roll pins have a beveled outer lip, and the concave face pulls the pin into the hole to make it move easier

I have PA punches and PeaveyMart punches and they ARE junk, but the Roll pin punches can be reground and hardened/tempered to make a nice punch that is not TOO hard.

one of the old Gunsmith books I have has a section on doing these kinds of mods.

What's so magical about a punch set? And let me guess, you've never used that particular set from PA. How many hundred roll pins do you remove a week?

I have a couple different sets from PA, steel and brass, and they work just fine. And, they aren't supposed to be made of super hard steel. They should be softer than the material of the hole to prevent damage. That's also the purpose of brass punches. The set includes have is fairly hard/tough steel, and the shafts haven't wanted to bend.

Look at the US made ones from Brownells, they have a pin projecting from the centre of the tip to centre the punch on the pin.

Same experiences with them. Not worth the 5$, and I also scratched up my receiver really badly as a result of them bending and snapping off. They are made of really soft steel, use caution!

Well I use them at work and home for the bikes ( snap on ). And I try my best not to buy crap from china.
 
These are ROLL pin punches, not intended for use on solid pins. Grinding the tip flat is not going to give you a proper drift punch, and will leave an inconsistent surface which will increase the chances of damaging the internal areas of your firearm. They are softer metal BECAUSE they are designed for roll pins which generally aren't fit too tightly, as they have spring tension in the steel to assist in their retention under normal use.

Firearm pins should be moved using DRIFT punches. Home Depot sells a set of Stanley Punches which are okay for firearms use (and a bonus couple of cold chisels and center punches).

As far as being junk, the Princess Auto $6 set is perfectly usable and will not bend break if used properly on ROLL PINS, not that I support many POWER FIST products, but some have their use.
 
No harm in using them for line up punches when trying to put a pin through a few holes
in sequence.
Soft punches are better than no punches at all.
 
The ones currently on sale are "Made In India" for Grand Rapids Industrial Tools or something along those lines. That should satisfy the made in China dissenters. :)
 
KBC has 2 sets on sale atm for $8.95. I have very limited experience with PA tools and look to keep it that way. Always impressed with KBC's stuff. They also have a 10% off promo for orders of $100 and up for online orders. use
