Pristine (Rem 700) action extractor problems?

I've had this Pristine action for a little over a year. I've put an IBI Savage small shank prefit ( barrel nut ) on it, chambered in 308 Win.

It often fails to extract fired cases, especially Lapua with brass. It's done this since the day I bought it. What is happening is the extractor claw is not snapping over the rim of the case every time.

It was headspaced with True North Arms headspace gauges. I originally had it set about 1/8 turn looser than the go gauge. This morning I decided to see if it would extract more reliably if I set the headspace to the absolute minimum. I set headspace on a freshly resized piece of Lapua brass which makes the go gauge quite tight. This made a big improvement, but it's still not 100% reliable.

Oh, and one more clue. If I swap the bolt from one of my other actions, the extraction is 100% reliable.

What's likely going on here? Is the extractor just set up incorrectly? I want to have an idea of what's really going on before I call Pristine about it.

It sounds like the extractor needs a slight tweak to engage more. You should be able to push a brass straight onto the bolt face and feel the extractor pop over the rim. You should also be able to pull straight back on that case and it should stay onto the bolt face. You can hang a couple hundred pounds from a correctly fitted extractor.

It could be the gripping edge of the extractor needs a little polishing.


Is it a riveted style extractor or a snap in? If it is a snap in, it may have been collapsed too far on installation.

If it is riveted it should not be loose. If it needs more engagement I suggest using a smith familiar with the 700 extractor. They can be carefully bent to engage more.

Pristine action with a Sako style extractor?
Might it be necessary to dress a little metal off the extractor hook to give a bit of clearance for the hook to snap over the rim?
Have you tried swapping the extractor from the bolt that does work all the time?
 
Thanks. I just checked, when I take the bolt out and manually press the case into the bolt head, the extractor will snap over and grab the case. It does hold on very tightly. One thing I just noticed when comparing my reliable Pristine action with the less reliable one, is that the extractor on the less reliable one sits slightly lower on the bolt head. I'm not sure if it's adjustable. I'll give them a call.

One other thing. It has dual ejectors and the less reliable one seems to have quite a bit stronger ejector springs in it.

I have not. Mainly because I've never disassembled a bolt before, but that's a good idea. Please forgive my naive posts, until recently I've been almost exclusively a falling block single shot guy :).

I now see you do not have a "Pristine (Rem 700) action as stated ...
I read the Pristine as in its original condition; unspoilt. The defintion of pristine.

Nothing Rem 700 here.

When my gunsmith replaced the extractor on my 7mm Mag, he "dressed" the front of the extractor ever so slightly to match the fine chamfer on the bolt. Closes effortlessly, and extracts every time.

Very easy if I remember correctly I just flipped it out almost by accident with my thumb then I was not sure it was right when I put it in it seemed too easy but it was right i sent them a photo to make sure and it's been good ever since so yeah be careful of the parts might come out before you know it
 
Issue is there is a known problem with the extractor on those actions.
They have a longer extractor they will give you. I probably have a couple left in my toolbox. I really do not have any intention of ever having a pristine auction in my shop again. I will get one to you if you send me your info.

Shortly after I started this thread to get an understanding of what the problem might be, I contacted Pristine. They verified that it probably needed a slightly longer extractor claw and sent me one along with a new spring and plunger. Yesterday they sent me a couple of videos on how to replace it. They've been great. I have two of their actions and other than this extractor issue they've been very good. I should have the time to try doing the extractor today.
