So im currently in the process of getting my private pilots license.

The main reason for getting it was because I spend a lot of time back and fourth between ontario (where I live) and northern quebec (where I snowboard a lot). It made a lot of sense to avoid the long drive by being able to fly myself back and fourth.

That being said, a lot of the land under my flight path is pretty remote, and ive been told if you are flying over a lot of remote wilderness, that its possible to get a wilderness atc. I know id feel a lot more comfortable knowing that if I ever go down ive got something with me (and not just a shottie that may or may not make it out of the plane with me on impact).

Does the wilderness atc only apply if you are a chartered bush pilot, or is a private license enough to qualify?

If not, I guess my 14" hp-9 will have to do.

I was talking to a wilderness carry instuctor about a similiar situation. He said he didnt see any problems with it but if I wanted to proced with it, to give the CFO a call and and get confirmation from them.

Thanks for the feedback so far, if anyone else has anything to share, please do.

I am about to start the process of getting my private pilots licence as well, and best of all it is not going to cost me anything. I persuaded the Sask government to pay for it. I can't believe my luck:wave:

I hate you people. want to talk them in to paying off my CPL(H) for me?

So something just popped into my head...

...if I fly from here to quebec... and stay in quebec for a week.. that means ill have my handgun when I get off the plane and travel to my hotel/cottage etc.

Im assuming normal transport rules apply, however what is the deal on the att from my hour to the airport and from the airport to where im staying?

I would prefer the extra power of a compact, large bore rifle over a pistol.
Not that much heavier or awkward to pack, a lot more power and less hassles.

It can't hurt to make the application, however part of the criteria to qualify for the ATC is that you must be able to demonstrate why it would not be possible for you to carry out your duties while using a long gun. I think your application would carry more weight if you were a commercial pilot or flight engineer whose duties included working on the ground in remote areas. They seem to prefer to tie the ATC's to commercial operations.

I am a licened pilot and have some experience flying in remote areas. When you get your private licence you wil be flying VFR, and generally common sense will direct you to plan your flights with saftey being of primary concern. That would always include the prospect of having to make a forced landing. This would mean that you fly near or over roads enroute to your destination. It is foolhardy to plan a VFR flight in a remote area over a long distance of uninhabited remote wilderness.
It is also extremley unlikely you would ever have any situation such as a forced landing . . . period. It just does not happen very often. And if it did, having properly planned your flight, you would be landing on or near a road.
There would be no need to be carry a large caliber handgun for defense in tis situation. A rifle or shotgun with slugs would be fine for any self defense or survival.

I would doubt you woud have grounds for a carry permit.

All of that said, enjoy getting you licence and have fun flying, it it one of the most fantastic and fun recreational activities!

You're getting way ahead of yourself. Start with a phone call to the CFC.

guns and planes

I have had the pleasure if driving the bush for 10 years ATTS are hard to come by, one year I had to be within certain lats and longs and had to meet all sorts of foolish requirements. If you are going to be a PPL holder and using a rental plane you have opened up another can of worms if its your own machine buy a pump gun and call it a day, rules and regs can get convalouted especially if your are forced to do an unexpected landing in say a park were no guns are allowed. Oh ya the further east you go the harder it will become. My two bits.
