probably dumb question but I have to ask....what is a 10/22?

OK, thanks, so basically a .22 with a 10 shot clip ( semi auto )

Its the most versatile 22 rifle on the market. There are so many parts you can upgrade on the rifle you could spend a small fortune.

Perfect....just what I need another addiction.....better start looking for one then.
And then look into "mods" and what can be done...

Thanks for the info guys.

I guess ruger is the favorite? since everyone refers to its name 10/22, are they available in left handed versions? anyone have one?

I don't think that Ruger makes a left hand 10/22. Or any other manufacture either. Possibly the Browning SA-22, it ejects straight down.

Not aware of left handed Ruger 10-22 receivers but there are left handed thumbhole aftermarket stocks.

There is a huge number of aftermarket accessories available from companies such as Volquartsen, Power Custom, etc etc. including some like the krinker plinker that essentially only use the receiver. Almost all of these are drop in parts. The first mod that most people do ($50 or so) is replace the hammer /sear combo to bring the somewhat heavy and gritty trigger pull down to a crisp 2.5 pounds at which point it becomes a dream to shoot..
Ruger announced a 16.5” barreled version this year which would make a really nice small game rig- not that the longer version isn’t nice too.

Some manufacturers are starting to offer aftermarket performance parts for the Remington 597 so you may want to consider this one as an option.

I've been looking for a semi-auto 22 and of course came across the Ruger 10/22 just like 'lildave' - it definately appears to be a favourite for performance out of the box, but more so due to large number of readily accessible & relatively 'cheap' upgrades (target barrels & sport stocks, extended mags, improved triggers, even entire receivers/frame upgrades). It seems that you can even get a lot of this stuff as stock items through Canadian 'hunting' supply stores (e.g. Bass Pro & LeBarons). But... a lot of the high-end target conversions and other stuff I've seen on the internet don't appear to be standard stock in our 'sporting goods' stores (in particular, mods that would give the 10/22 a 'mini-assault' rifle appearance like folding and bullpup stocks, muzzle brakes/suppressors, etc.) -> so my quesion is: assuming your end-result isn't less than 26.5" total length (i.e. which would make your 10/22 'restricted'), what are the current legal and logistical realities of ordering parts from the USA - what's being stopped (legitimately or not) at the border? Will a 50 round magazine make it across? What about a folding stock? Or a receiver? How well versed are our customs officials on the finer points of what is and isn't legal? Any comments appreciated.

Thanks - I realized after posting that I should have looked around here first - there are a large number of related 10/22 threads, many going into detail re import of mods/parts and upgrade possibilities. I'll try to round up some links for related posts and add them here. Surprising (to me) is that the US Export controls are the limiting factor to a greater degree than the Canadian Import restrictions.

almost every mod if not all can be done yourself.

there are many mods that can be done

bolt buffer (5$)
Roll pins to tighten things up
Automatic bolt release (free instructions on the net)
Hogue Stock
heavy barrel
scope &base/rings

Hey all,

What are some good mods to start out with that don't require a gunsmith?

To HedgeHog's list, I woud add a Volquartzen hammer assembly and/or hammer/trigger assembly. Drops right in, brings the trigger pull weight (by far, the 1022's most limiting factor) down to 1.5-3lbs.

After that, the sky is the limit:

20" Clerke fluted match barrel
Boyds thumb-hole stock, free floated, but not yet bedded
Trophy 6-18x40AO with Burris Zee rings and Power Custom base
Volq trigger, hammer, bolt release, bolt buffer
Brownells trigger group pins
Uncle Mikes studs and Harris bi-pod (not shown)
