I brought my new savage 10 tr to the range yesterday and had trouble with groups, it should be sub moa at least. Instead, I got groups that where ridiculous, some on target, others 4 inches apart, etc...

I tried different ammo, some where reloads but none grouped at all. When I got home, I noticed that the scope was touching the forward corner of the rail, enough to leave two distinct marks through the scope's finish, no dents though but obviously some pressure was applied to the scope.

Now, obviously I corrected the problem after kicking my own arse, but is this slight pressure enough to cause such a problem or should I look at something else?

weaver 4-20 50 mm super slam, 100 yards, side focus set accordingly. The top forward corner of the rail was forcing into the forward (cone) part of the scope.

Now I was breaking the rifle in, but still after 50 or more rounds you would expect some grouping...

when a rifle is shooting like ####:

1) check all screws are tight on the rifle and scope. (blue lock tight scope mounts)
2) check the crown of the barrel for damage.
3) ensure you have a solid shooting platform, clear from muzzle to target.
4) ensure scope is parallax free ( cross hairs don't move from POA when you wiggle you head. )

if any issue are found fix accordingly

re-shoot groups with major focus on the fundamentals, have others that are known to be good shots shoot.

if problem persist change scope with one that is known to be good and try again

if problem persists see gunsmith.,

Years ago when I purchased my brand new Savage 12 Fclass in 6.5x284 and headed to the range to sight it in, I couldn't even hit the paper at 50 yards, even after bore sighting. I hung a giant 1000 yard target up and that at least gave some feed back. To make a long story short, the issue was with the barrel. The rifling in the last 4 inches was fooked. Basically straight with a few chatter marks. The jackets were getting torn off when they hit that brick wall in the barrel and the bullets were zinging all over the place. A fine example of QC there. Since then I examine the rifling of Savage rifles before anything else. Good luck.
