Hey all, I have a problem I'm looking for assistance with.

I have an 870 Express magnum. I put on a cheapish ATI buttstock with pistol grip and also fore grip.. I had to use a file and file the fore grip down a bit to fit but in the end it worked fine.

While I was away my wife decided to surprise me and send me a picture of my 870 in a bunch of pieces. . "I think I broke your gun" was the subject of the email.

Luckily the next email she sent me was a picture of my 870 looking bad ass with an ATI top folding stock with pistol grip and pistol grip foreend)

It was fun to pay around with (the gun) but I didn't like the top folding stock for actual shooting. Stock was too long and always loosening up. Also police give me a hard time saying it's illegal to modify a gun like that and I could be charged but lucky for me I'm polie and respectable so they won't etc..
So I put the other ATI stock back on.

Took me a while to get it back together but I finally got it. Here's my problem. The slide is really stuff. REALLY stiff. When I try and cycle the action I need to force it. I can still do it but I can tell it's tight and clearly not as smooth as before. I took it apart and put it back together but the problem persists.

What would cause the 870 action to stick like that? Why would the stock be fine previously then when I reinstall it (after the folding stock deal) it become stiff?

Any advice?

Cheers

Did you had to use strenght to change the forend? I would strip the gun down and see if the action bars are sliding freely in their slot without the bolt. Maybe the action bars are bend a little from the forend change?

Nothing wrong with adding those parts, the individual saying otherwise dosen't know what he is talking about and should be educated on the rules.

If you can afford, buy better parts, ATI isn't exactly quality. For only a little more Knoxx is a very good choice.

The foreend grip might not be installed properly. When you reattach the foreend grip to the slider tube, you have to make sure that the slider arms are centered properly before you tighten the round nut. It sounds like your slider arms are not centered.

nothing illegal with a folding stock .don't force the gun or you will make things worse . take it apart and see were it is binding . are you sure you have it together correctly i find that it is sometimes better to leave the problem to you are in a better frame of mind as frustration tends to dull the thought process .

For whatever reason, I have found a stiffening of the action when I've screwed on the mag cap too tightly for what it is worth.

There could be a couple of reasons why the pump action is binding.

One reason is that somehow when you put the carrier group back it, it was misaligned or came off alignment from the action bars.

The other very likely reason is foreend itself it binding at the interface with the barrel. This is not uncommon on various 870 after-market fore-ends. The fore-end inletting under the barrel might need work(sand paper and broom handle/dowel) so that it doesn't jam underneath as it approaches the rear. The side tabs interfacing the action bars might also need some shaving down.

I recall doing this sanding job for Choate and I believe ATI for couple 870s(not mine). I use a Police fore-end. Hogue is nice too.

PM me if you want me to check it out in person.
