Problem With a Savage Axis In 270 Round Keyhole At 25 Yards

Saw this in one barrel where the rifling was straight for the last couple of inches (plainly a defect). Also saw it in a barrel with a bulge.

The easiest, cheapest, fastest and probably safest way to fix this problem would be a gunsmith. For the cost in ammunition trying to “figure it out” the smith will be able to tell you.

Good luck.

It has rifling, I ran a tight patch down the barrel and indicated a smooth even twist and no gaps.
I will check the twist today. It was cleaned before the attempt to sight it in.
The rifle is new only fired with one box of ammo, sat in the closet for a few years.
The owner bought it from Green Diamond in Moncton.
The firearms sales part of the business closed a few years now so don't have the option of taking it back.
I know two guys with bore scopes and if I can get hold of them take a good look down the barrel.
I will Mike the rounds and see if they are uniform.
The owner picked up a second box of ammo Win 150 grain after the purchase.
I check everything again and check it out with 130 grain ammo today or tomorrow.

Did you check the bore diameter? Should be pretty easy to just stick a 277cal bullet in the end of the muzzle to check if it's a tight fit or not?

Did the bullet in the muzzle as well.
Just haven't looked inside the barrel with the proper camera.
Apparently the is a difference in a camera that you would use to check in a drain and a different one for a rifle barrel.
A gentleman told me about it last week.
Who knew that little bit of information.
I missed a lot in the few years I never bothered with shooting when my wife was
Diagnosed with cancer.
The 103 grain bullet might make all the difference but may not be winchester but some other brand.

Just to clarify, the bullet in the muzzle appeared to confirm it is a 277cal barrel?

There sure seems to be a race to the bottom in American made firearms?

Cheap sells. In the past cheap surplus firearms filled that niche, but nowadays the only surplus that competes with the kind of prices you can get a Savage Axis, Rem 783, etc for is a sporter Enfield. My Axis cost me ~$235 and it was a scope package combo. The rifle has some drawbacks, but at the end of the day it goes bang, shoots small groups, and kills game. Can't really ask for more considering what I paid, and from my perspective it was a HUGE upgrade from the iron sighted No1 Mk3 I have and carried my first season afield.

Just look at it this way: Most people buying cheap rifles are relatively new to guns or economically unable to buy something more expensive (I was both of these). Either way, it means more guns in circulation and more gun owners.

I used to want to shoot every calibre so I bought a wide variety of brands and sizes, I have at least 10 savages from edges to axis to 99's I have never bought a bad one but like any manufacturer they exist. I am interested to see if you find a solution

Finally after reading your input I picked up a box of Federal 130 grain bullets and took it to the range.
In 12 rounds at 75 yards I shot two rouds adjust shoot two more and adjusted until I got it wher I wanted it.
The last two rounds cutting 1 hole which I think is good considering what I had to work with.
Thanks for all your help.

There was a question asked above that I don't think we got an answer to:

Would it happen to be Winchester Supreme Expedition Long Range 150gr Accubond LR?

Now, knowing that 130gr shoots just fine, I am even more curious about this. I've shot some 150gr from my Axis without issue, but it was federal blue box which uses a pretty short/stubby bullet.

Another post with incomplete information and thus the guessing game started.

The only clear and concise information was from guntech . . . take it to a competent gunsmith!
