Hi..need some help...if someone has experienced this same problem I would like their help in identifying the problem.....I have an STI Edge, 10K rounds thru it that is having cycling problems...I can cycle the Edge with a full mag BY HAND without any problems, all rounds feed fine into the barrell and extract properly...the problem arises when I fire a round the spent casing only comes back out of the barrell maybe 1/2 inch, the slide comes all the way back and tries to chamber a new round but the spent casing is in the way (not even all the way out of the barrell)....sounds like the extractor is slipping off the spent casing but I have examined it and seems OK not broken, I have also tried to bend it a little more to put more tension on it but nothing seems to work, it also holds a bullet fine by itself when using the tension "test" method....any ideas?, or is the problem something else and not the extractor that could be making the extractor start to pull the ejecting casing out and then slip off ???..thanks

my guess is the hook on the extractor is wearing out to a different angle?
Cause that is the problem i have on my M&P.... exact same syndrome

Maybe the feedlips on the mag are a bit flared, allowing the nose of the next round in the mag to catch the rim of the empty being extracted and knocking it off the extractor? Maybe the recoil spring is wearing out and the gun is coming out of battery while the case is still gripping the chamber?

Lots of good suggestions there.

I'd start by checking the extractor to see if it's rounded of. A quick fix until getting a new one would be to file it a little to give it back a small edge.

I have also seen a few .22lr that has lots of carbon deposits in the extractor that caused failure to eject since it did not grab good.

Not having more details on your issue, that's where I would start.

Check that the feed lips on the mag are not contacting the extracted round, I had this issue with my .38 super, didn't diagnose it until I removed the ejector and then hand cycled some brass and found the msg was bumping the rounds off the extractor

sell it and get an SV :D, kidding, sounds like the extractor has lost its tension. You pony'd up the cash for an STI over the cheaper guns, so put an extra $100 down for the proper extractor, AFTEC. Yeah they cost way more then a stock one but they are a higher prefomance part. Would you put Kirkland tires on a sports car? AFTEC is the best investment/upgrade you can do to any 1911

Good suggestions BUT why would the gun cycle properly BY HAND (feed a full mag AND eject those rounds with no problems), but yet not work properly on its own when fired ???.....thanks for the help

Loading Major with VVN320, and yes, the extractor could possibly work when cycling by hand and then not once the brass has bulged some and there is more resistance....I did the "tension check" test though and also put a little more bend in the extractor to increase tension and the result was the same

Only issue I ever had with my Edge not extracting propoerly was after several years of never cleaning the extractor (I know, I know entirely my fault) the gun started to have failure to extract as you describe. Interesting thing was yes it would extract perfectly by hand and also I could get it to work perfectly with a slower powder in the gun.

But bottom line was after I cleaned the extractor properly (take it out dunk and scrub, scrub all the carbon out from the breechface and the tunnel) it extracted any ammo 100% reliably again.

Still went out and got an aftec afterwards just incase

Don't forget empty casings are expanded a little after firing.

I second that. If it has never been replaced, id start with the extractor. Also, it is important when testing function by cycling by hand, to try your best to mimic how the slide would move while firing. Rip the slide back and let it fly. I had a similar issue and would be constantly dumping my mag to clear a partially extracted round from the chamber. after dropping in a new extractor ive gone 3000 rounds withtout a single malfunction.
