This gent posted an issue with his Savage in the "Precision Rifle" forum, and you suggest he re-crown it himself using a drill?..........Lmfao. Take it to a gunsmith and have it done properly, on a lathe, or do nothing at all.
I am no bubba, I am part time gunsmith, have a lathe and all nine yards machine shop in my house and been helping Canada wide famous gunsmith with fluting the barrels, inleting the stocks and machining the action/barrel sleeves. The thing is that most people have to rely on shipping the guns to gunsmiths for repair. To ship the gun to gunsmith both ways plus disasembly of it plus removing the barrel indicating in in 4-chuck crowning it, assembly the barrel and gun, handling, insurance cost etc, etc might cost at least $100. For the fraction of that price everybody can buy hand crowning HSS tool with couple of pilots and be set for life of crowning jobs. All have cordless drill, brass round head screw and valve laping paste and trust me there will be no difference in accuracy between those two methods no matter what your friendly gunsmiths will tell you otherwise. Its simple, simple job for average mechanicly oriented person. GR8
