Hey guys,

I have a problem with my M14 scout that I just can't seem to figure out.

The rifle is a Norc cut down to 18.5 " by Valley Gunsmithing who I also had mount my Springfiled Armoury scout mount. they did a fantasitc job and the gun is very quick handling and reliable. I have my Eotech 552 mounted on this forward of the action (obviously).

I was out shooting today and observed a huge a problem... to me anyway!

On the cold bore first shot, the gun shoots 4" high at 25 m (no big deal there) then it starts stringing horizontally 4 " left to right. Once the barrel heated up it was shooting a 4" diameter group that I couldn't call at all. And this is only at 25 m!!!!

I even bagged it at 25 and got an inconsistent group. I removed the Eotech then remounted it and got the linear stringing.

It ain't me, I have tons of trigger time with everything from C 8's, C 7's to M4's to MP 5's to sniper rifles etc.

I'm thinking two things... something has to be putting inconsistent tension on the barrel or the scope mount heats up and throws zero. I doubt it is the Eotech, I've used one operationally and never heard of one with reticle bounce.

I noticed that the side of the handguard opposite the charging handle is tight against the stock... could this be partially responsible?

Anyone have any suggestions? Should I consider swapping out the Norc barrel for a Springfield 18.5"?

What groups do you get with the EOTech off, using iron sights?

If it is the scope mount, and you can't identify what is the problem, then you might take it back to Valley Gunsmithing. They would have a better chance of finding the cause.

Try shooting without the Eotech all together. If it's still a problem then it's something with components related to your barrel. If it's not, maybe the heat transfer to your mount is affecting your scope. It was mentioned online a few times about scout mounts cooking electronic optics such as red dots.

Bad crown? Even the pro gun smiths can screw up sometimes...

Oh yeah - did you test fire it before the "scouterization"? If so did i exibit the same problem?

"Handguard Slap" it sorta sounds like but that usually gives you verticle stringing not horizontal. Also check the gas plug. I've some weird groups result from something as simple as the gas plug being a wee bit loose!
