THANKS GUNNUTZ! PROBLEM SOLVED.:)

I've got a problem with my S&W 686 and I'm hoping the community can help me out. Over the last little while the cylinder has consistantly become more and more difficult to open and close to the point of really having to force it in and out of the frame. My experience with older rifles has been that some times you just have to man handle them to get them opperating properly but I guess this doen't apply to handguns because now the cylinder won't close at all. I assumed it just needed a good cleaning and oiling but this didn't help at all. I can get the cylinder partially into the fram but not all the way. Anyone elts have this problem? Can anyone offer some suggestions?

Thanks.

try to see if you can turn the ejector rod
it is a left hand thread remember, and they can come loose enough to stop the cylinder from closing

Sounds like one of the following (in order of liklihood):

1) Ejector rod is unscrewing.
2) Dirt under the ejector star.
3) Powder residue or lack of lube on the cylinder pin.
4) You have a 686-0 model revision that hasn't gotten the "M" recall and the firing pin collar bushing is binding on the cylinder.

As above the ejector rod is most likely coming unscrewed. An easy fix is to remove the no. 1 screw, closest to the trigger guard, slide the cylinder and rod off the frame, place six fired casings into the cylinder then tighten the ejector rod, don`t overtighten but snug it up comfortably, remove the empty casings and reinstal the cylinder into the frame and put the no. 1 screw back in. Also as stated above clean under the ejector star and keep in mind this is a reverse thread.
