Ok so I'm new here, just started reloading and have read some very usefull info on this site from all of you experienced shooters and I thank you. My problem is, I just got a bag of winchester unprimed brass 300win mag and alot of them had what looks like cracking just above the belt. So being new to this I played it safe and did not load any of them. Anyone else experience this?

I have noticed with my 204, about 1-10 winchester brass splits at the neck on the first fireing. I am going to try and get some Hornady brass instead.

Winchester Brass

I'd like more info on this as well as I have a bag of Wincherster 300 win unprimed brass as well that i'm going to start reloading with. I hope I didn't waste my money on junk.

Ok so I took a pic, and about 15 out of the bag of 50 have this.

Can you get a close-up?

I'm pretty sure those are marks from the forming process, not cracks, but a better look wold be nice. I know, I'm being a pain in the a$$.......

Brass

I just cracked open my bag and most of the brass look the the pic you posted
I don't think it's cracking but from when it's formed.

Been taking a good long look at these cases and what looks like cracks, but not sure, looks like indentations up close. Here's a closer look.

Now that's a close up! good job.

It almost looks like they had grief making them and however they get the finished outside shape. I don't know how they make cases, but I'm guessing they they are drawn over a mandrel???? Someone please enlighten me if I am way off.
Anyway, maybe the die was out of adjustment when they did the last "stamp"?
Have you tried chambering an empty case? What does the case mic in the questionable area?

I havent tried to chamber any of the empty cases, but they did go through the sizing die really easy. With little or no lube. Maybe when I get some time I'll cut a cross section of one to get a better understanding.

When they draw a belted case, they have to leave the area of the belt slightly oversize so they can turn the belt down to the proper dimensions; what looks like a "crack" is just what's left of the oversized area being turned down to size.
