Problem with Ruger rings

I'm in the process of mounting a scope on a Ruger. The factory ringgs don't seem to be allowing the scope to sit squarely on the bottom half. I've haven't got the front and back mixed up. Just wondering what my options were to correct this because I don't think lapping will solve the problem. Is there an alternative mounting system or has the rifle itself been improperly milled for the rings?

Thanks in advance for the help

Out of curiosity are the rings of two different heights? If they aren't then you have a set of rings that fit the #1 or Redhawk revolver. If they are different heights then you have the right set of rings. Never heard of a Ruger action have the ring base milled wrong as they are investment cast using a lost wax system extremely accurate casting with minor machining required. Its possible that you have the cross lock screw turned and not fitting the dovetail in the action perfectly, check to see if the screw sits just below flush with the side of the ring base opposite to the nut side of the screw.
We don't live in a perfect world so anything is possible in the world of Ruger.

Ruger dovetails

Hi Powderkeg. I have a Ruger SA 77 Mark 11 that the dovetails were machined out of line from the factory and I couldn't get a set of rings to install correctly. I recently finally took the rifle to a gunsmith and had him machine the sides of the dovetails parallel to the sides and centered on the receiver. He also made the tops parallel to the bottom at the correct measurement to each other. Now the rings install properly and line up. However, when the rifle was in at the gunsmith, another customer brought a Ruger rifle with the same problem. Ruger did have a QC problem because this rifle was produced in the mid 90's. Steve

Would this work

Do you think that by using Ruger to weaver base and Posi Zee rings with the pivoting insert would work.?

Your problem seems to be what is going on with my gun. The front ring fits nice and square on the reciever but the rear won't. Even if I try the front ring on the rear it won't fit properly. Seems to be a problem with the rear machining on the reciever.

I just had a weaver to ruger adapter put on and machined to accept ARMS QD rings. the bases were so far skewed to the right that I had to use all my scope left internal adjustment to get it sighted in. I thought it was the adapter but now I'll have to cherk the ruger bases on the receiver. BTW this is a 2005 frontier

It was the rear receiver dovetail on mine that was skewed the worse also. I have a set of 1" diameter bars used to check the alignment of rings and on this Ruger the front rings aligned straight but the back receiver dovetail aligned the back rings almost 3/16" out in the center of the receiver. When I had the dovetails machined, the rings align the bars almost perfectly dead center. Try this website for more answers because he is the machinist who did the work. Barry at http://www.bitsofpieces.com/index.html. I bought this Ruger in the mid '90's and it has been the only Ruger I had had troubles with but I would check every Ruger I buy from now on because it has cost me a ton of money finding and correcting this issue. Apparently it is not unique problem. Steve

Not quite that bad

I've been playing around with the rings a bit. The rear seems to be the problem but not as bad as yours was. The rings would only need a small adjustment to fit perfectly. If I tighten the front ring the rear doesn't fit perfectly but it does fit. Also, according to my bore sighter the scope is pretty good for alignment. ( about 2" at 100 yds according to the grid ) My hope is that by switching to the Burris Zee's with the pivoting inserts the scope will mount properly and hold still. Have you had any experience with these type of rings.

Someone also told me that if the rigs weren't the factory originals that this could cause a problem.

Zee Rings

My hope is that by switching to the Burris Zee's with the pivoting inserts the scope will mount properly and hold still. Have you had any experience with these type of rings.

I bought a set of these for the first time recently, (not for a Ruger rifle but a Husqvarna). With the inserts you can correct a lot of alignment problem. They're very gentle on the scope too. After installing them on the rifle (270 weatherby), correcting an alignment problem, and running it through the paces, I printed tiny little groups. I went back to the same shop and bought another pair of Burris Zee rings. ;)

Rings

Actually, I like the Ruger ring design and installation so I haven't looked into another company for a ring mounts. Also, all my Rugers are stainless and nobody else makes stainless rings that I am aware of for the Ruger. All I normally do to the Rugers is lap the rings into perfect alignment using a lapping bar and checking the results with my alignment bars. The Burris are nice rings but I haven't needed the feature they have. Steve

Thanks

Thanks for all the assistance. I've got quite a few things to try now. Hopefully I'll get it sorted out because I really like this rifle.
