Problem with SX3 20g - won't hold a shell in magazine

My wife and I were shooting clays last weekend when when her 20g SX3 suddenly stopped holding a shell in the magazine. If you slide a shell into the mag, it pushes itself back out and comes to a rest against the forward edge of the carrier, sticking about 1/2" out of the magazine.

I took it apart and from what I can see everything looks ok. I tried comparing it to the only other auto shotgun I have (beretta pintail), and the actions are too dissimilar to try and compare. A friend has an SX3 that I'm hoping to compare it to, just not sure when I'll see him.

I'm wondering if there is a spring that came out? It looks to me like the button that releases the bolt to slide forward (into battery?? - is this the proper term?) should possibly have a spring at the opposite end, that would push the bar in towards the action and lock the shell into the magazine.

Hard to describe, but I'm hoping someone might have an idea. I've googled and come up empty handed.

Thanks

On the bottom of the bolt there is a little 'fin' which acts as the shell stop when the bolt is closed. I don't know about half way out but I'd day the shell should be about 1/4 of the way out of the magazine. As long as the case is resting against that fin, you are good. The gun will shoot just fine of a shell is between the lifter and the bolt too.

The 'fin' I described is the magazine stop. It is part of the bolt assembly.
You are correct .that bolt stop " fin" also is spring loaded and holds the bolt handle into the bolt .check to see if the bolt handle is in its locked position if not it can keep the bolt stop from dropping down its full amount .

@Cintax, that's exactly how hers is holding the shell. Is that normal operation?

I feel stupid asking these questions, but I've only shot the gun once when I first bought it a couple years ago. Part way through her shoot the other day she seemed to think that something had changed and they weren't holding inside the mag, "like they usually do".

Maybe she had a brain fart and doesn't realize it's normal.

Hello. If her gun looks like mine then it is operating correctly. The shell stop is on the bolt where as many shotguns have the shell stop at the magazine tube.
