Hello all, bought this rifle 4 years ago, have used commercial and my own reloads with no problems.
I wanted to do a camo paint job.
Took the rifle apart in the three groups.
Did the camo and no other mods etc. were done. Put it all together, out to the range. It shoots great single shot, but will not feed more than 2 out of the mag.
Today, loaded a 5 rds. (commercial) first one was click, ejected, second one click, had to force the bolt back to eject, but the last 2 were bang, bang!!
I have 3 magazines, 2 standard 5 rds. and one 5/20. All were loaded and showed the same problems.
But.. all would fire well if loaded single shot.
Got me beat, so would like opinions.
Thanks all for answers.

Clean your bolt, maybe debris in your firing pin channel?
Also, after several hundred rounds, all M14/M1A type rifles will need the carbon build up removed from their gas pistons and gas plugs.
FIRST things I look at when an otherwise perfectly functioning rifle suddenly exhibits stoppages.
However, first round load and click? No bang? I would absolutely suspect a firing pin impedement.
Blow it out with compressed air from firing pin hole end or if you have the tools , disassemble bolt and clean.

"...paint job..." You paint the barrel too? You might have painted the gas hole closed.
Mind you, "Problems feeding from a magazine" covers a whole lot of territory. Since it's happening with all your mags, there's something about the rifle that is clogged. Might be the gas hole or it might be the tolerances of the gas system that you changed with paint.
"...firing pin being..." Fires single shots just fine. Means the fp is fine.
