I am using an RCBS Rockchucker press that my father bought 44 years ago, it has never broken or had parts replaced. It has loaded a ton of ammo over the years and is still running strong, like you said time for you to get a better quality press.
Yes the linkage from the handle to the ram, the square piece slides throught the toggle, and the handle is connected to the square holder, it snaps the star shapped toggle when you press down on the handle. It doesn't seem to be able to take any extra torque.
Perhaps overtightening the linkage at that point? It's hard to imagine that any resizing would require enough force to cause that part to fail even if it was less-than-perfect steel. Why don't you post some pictures to give us a little more info? That might be more productive than the predictable Lee-bashing that this sort of thread encourages.
Regardless, I'd like to hear what Lee is doing in their warranty department to keep you happy.
"it would appear I'm not the only one having this problem if you can't buy them." I suppose that's possible. I think it's more likely that they are not commonly in stock because they don't commonly fail.
I've had many, many thousands of rounds through my recent-production Breech Lock Challenger press over the last two years with absolutely zero issue.
How tight are you tightening your handle on? it doesnt need much at all to keep it tight, just enough that it doesnt wobble, and the 25 ft lbs is way easy to overdo. Its less force then pushing the lever and resizing your cases.
