Any one have any problems with Lyman rifle dies? I couldn't find my RCBS dies for .308 (got misplaced some where in my move to BC) So I went to local sports store and all they had where Lyman for the .308
So I picked them up they are the Deluxe Rifle 3-die set a full length sizer die seater die and a neck size die.. So I set the sizer die up as per the directions, lube up a few cases and tried it out. well first shell ran into die and as I reached the top of the travel I hear a snap. lower the ram and have a look and find that the de capping pin bent. well before I started I looked and made sure the de cap rod was centered in the die. I checked in my other die set for the .38/357 and found some spare pins so I changed it out and set everything up again making sure everything was right. Away I go and again a snap and an other bent pin. So I figure something had to wrong with the die so I changed out the FL die for the neck size die and tried that trying to get the primer out only this time again snap an other pin but also bent neck expansion rod. That had me looking at the other Lyman die set for the .30/357 and then I remembered why I had 2 sets of .38/357 dies a Lyman and a RCBS was because the Lyman pistol dies used to do the same so I got a RCBS set. So what I would like to know is has any one else had this kind of problem with any Lyman dies. and what did it take to fix the problem?

Send me a PM if you want with phone number. I could probably help you.

Sounds like the expander rod is too low, there should only be 3/8 max of pin sticking out below the die. Needs to be adjusted

So I figure the expander rod is not centered in the die by just a hair and pin is missing the primer hole and slides off and bends. And when I set up the die the expander de capping pin was flush with the bottom as that is how I start out. Then I turn it down a half turn at a time till primer is expelled. I also have a old Lyman die set for the 38/357 that does the same thing but not all the time.

just for starts try a unprimed case, does it work OK if so the rod and pin is setup fine if same thing happens the pin is out too far, always do this first time setting up,

The 38/357 die has some play in the expander die rod which allows the rod to move but the rifle die is a better set up and rod has more support and no movement. And To make sure it is not the cases I took a lee hand trimer for a 30 06 and ran it into the case and the guide pin goes into the primer hole every time in fact it will not miss with out a fair amount of force.

Thanks for the replies. How ever I have found the problem and I am ashamed to admit it but I did some thing really stupid. I was using a progressive press and really screwed up I was so into getting everything set up that I forgot one really important step. TOO PICK A STATION THAT HAD A HOLE TO ALLOW THE PRIMER TO BE EJECTED.

Might feel stupid, but possibly a common mistake, so a great lesson and reminder to others.
Glad to see you got things going.

That is funny but at the same time a good reminder to reloaders. Thanks for sharing your story.
