I am reading quite a bit about people swapping out the factory J-lock shrouds for non J-lock shrouds.

What is the problem with J-lock shrouds ? Does it introduce problems to accuracy, lock time, extra weight ? Why would I want/need to swap it out for pre J-lock shrouds ?

Most people including me don't like the looks of it and the added key that can get lost. Reports of inconsistent ignition can occur with the design, but I have no proof nor seen any test on that. I never liked the over compressed spring around the firing pin. Other than that it works. I picked up another firing pin assy for $40 and swapped it out. I'll keep the old J-lock one for a backup.

There is a reason that Police models are not fitted with them. For police work, you can't have ANY risk of j-lock failure... so obviously Remington can't guarantee that they will never break or accidentally 'lock up'.

Essentially, for civvie work, there is not a big difference. However, for some (me included) it's just one more reminder that the government wants to control me... :)

Same reason why people hate the integrated locks on newer S&W's. It's a sell-out to over intrusive governement agencies.

Just my opinion..

j lock

i have a j lock remington 700 theres nothing wrong, works fine no difference from the old 700 rems that i can see , i unlocked it when i got it havent looked at it since, i think the problem is that a lot of people dont want it on there guns for what ever reason good or bad, if you got a gun with one give me the gun i dont mind, haaaaaaaaa

talk to 'Head Damage' on the board here, I believe his locked up with a round in the chamber.:runaway:
I never had an issue with mine, but replaced it after hearing that.

I have a Left Hand 308 and the jlock is on the left side. It 'almost' interferes with the safety and I feel it every time I work it. So I will probably change it out if I decide to keep the rifle.
Canuckhunter. Where did you find the assembly for $40? I would do it in minute if I could find one for a short action at that price.
Also, how difficult is it to adjust the trigger for lighter pull on a m700?
Thanks, Bob

I got it from Brownells a year ago. Price may have gone up since. They ship to Canada.
Trigger is easy to adjust. Someone may have a tutorial on how to do that here, if not search the web. You can get 700 factory triggers down to 2 - 2 1/2lbs. safely. I do it all the time. If you want less than that, you need to take em apart and custom hone them. I recommend that to a competent smith or it becomes junk fast.
