I picked up a Rossi Model 92 stainless in .454 Casull off the EE a short while ago. I got it for a really good price as there was a small crack in the forearm and it wasn’t cycling shells to well.

In trying it out, the rifle cycles .45 Colt cartridges perfectly, but seems to hang up with the slightly longer .454 Casull rounds. The original owner had only put about 18 rounds of .454 Casull through her before giving up on it. My question is will this condition get better after firing a few hundred.45 Colt through it, or should I send the rifle in to get looked at? I intend to shoot mostly.45 Colt anyway but would like to be able to fire the occasional.454 Casull for hunting’s. Any suggestions from anyone who’s had experience with these rifles?

What is the overall length of the 454? Maybe the nose is getting hung up as it is lifted? Try some shorter flat points?

I’m using factory Winchester 250gr HP. The lifter is coming up no problem but it’s jamming as the bolt is going forward. If you wiggle the lever it will eventually go in. Seems the angle is too steep as the cartridge is going in.

Im.betting its the HPs or just a touch too long.
If you hand load you can make 45 Colt as hot as 454 factory with no issues .

Ye be welcome. Rossi 92's are a great learning platform for gun tinkerers to work with. Lucky fer us folks these days is the speed at which we can grab & store info on most any project we wish to tackle.;)

Not sure if it will help (unlikely) but mine never had any issue cycling a pretty wide variety of 454 casull rounds, there was no break in period.

I found the longer the COL, the narrower the nose (metplat) needs to be, or it catches.

If using a bullet with a really wide/flat metplat, you need to seat them deeper, IF shooting full length.454 Casull. Shoot the same bullet in .45 Colt and you have no problems. Or go with a narrower nose.

Kind of sucks, but that's my experience. And I found this out AFTER ordering $300 worth of custom 340 grain cast hunting bullets with a really wide metplat..... :(

like any gun designed for one cartridge but can use optionals - when you look at the length difference of the 45 colt and the 454 casull, IF you are continually shooting 45 colt it may created build up of lead and powder in the breech chamber causing the longer Casull cartridge to jam up or not extract or load properly. Just a suggestion - try to clean it WELL and then just use the 454 and see if it does the same thing if no probs that's whats been happening. Seen this with people shooting 38 out of 357 guns.

Send it to site sponsor Rusty Wood Trading Company in Mission, BC Peter is a master at working these rifles.

I've never had a feeding issue with mine with either 45 Colt or 454 Casull and I load up to 405gr WFNGC's in the 454 Casull but I had Peter slick it up anyway for when I shot it in Cowboy Action competitions.

"Fixing" it yourself may cost you a lot more $$$$$$in the long run as parts may not be available if you botch something up.But it's your gun.
