thinking of buying a 2012 model year 686 with the 4.2 barrel but iv heard of a problem with the hammer locking into the cocked postition on the new style S&W revolvers with an internal key lock. is this something i should be worrying about or should i just go buy my gun?

thanks for ny help:ar15:

I have 2 of the 4.2's with the internal lock.

When I bought the first one I heard the same stories so I took the lock out right away.

When I bought the second one I checked out the S&W Forum and the consensus seemed to be the whole internal lock binding thing was all BS so I left the lock alone. So far I have had no problems with the gun or the lock. Several hundred practice rounds and 1 IPSC match and all good.

However I do keep one of the keys in my shooting bag :)

Another 686 6 inch and I never had any issues with the lock..just more American bs and politics on the internet..the new smiths are WAY better than the old ones had a 586 and 29-3 in the 80s and the double action and grips sucked..the new ones are smooth right out of the box..and the new wood grips are the best..

Go ahead and buy the gun. Remove the useless lock if you want and you will never have to worry about it engaging itself.

If you do decide to take it out, make sure you have the appropriate tools: properly fitting hollow ground screwdrivers and a non-marring (plastic or rubber) hammer to tap the sideplate loose are a must, a rebound spring tool from Brownells is nice to have.

Thats only a myth with the Hillary Hole. If it were to lock up than its rare happening don't be worried go and buy one those new 686's . There great guns and shoot awesomely too...
