So I've been known to do gear reviews on other forums for other hobbies, so I thought I'd give it a go here...give me a break though this is my first gun related entry
The Hogue Overmolded Grip for the AR 15
Intro:
I'm a shooter with bigger hands/longer fingers. This causes a problem for me when I shoot some firearms as it affects my grip at times. This is obviously an issue with the AR-15 considering that the factory grip is a hard plastic, small and narrow one.
Background:
At work I was sized up with a Hogue Overmolded stock for my sidearm. It's been great, 2 years and it looks almost as good as it did the first day it came back from the armorer.
If you're like me you can appreciate small changes in ergonomics to create a more comfortable experience when using your equipment. That's not to say that I lube my barrel after each shot when bench rest shooting, however I do appreciate when something fits more comfortably - I'll take nylon gear over leather as an example.
So on to the product...
Hogue Overmolded AR-15 grip:
This is it...
It's a good, quality, grip, the guys at Dave's Surplus have it listed for $31.95 which is almost double what they are priced in the U.S. BUT, factor in shipping and exchange, and the convenience of walking into the store...it's not such a bad price point. Further, in my experience of other Hogue products, the price is related to the quality of the product. I almost forgot, you get the excellent service from the staff at Dave's also. No need worrying about being satisfied by a company south of the border.
Installation is easy, I just winged it...but then I lost the detent spring for the safety...so then I youtube'd the installation...

At least I know knew what spring I was looking for on the floor, cause I lost it.
So after locating the spring, the install is about as straight forward as can be. It's literally a 2 minute job, and the end result? A firm, comfortable grip which provides more comfort for the Shooter. The rifle looks sharper in my opinion and the overmolded rubber ensures a better grip, less likely to compromise due to sweat or other elements. It also increases the aesthetics of the rifle.
The molded finger grooves are comfortable and rubber overmolded has a slight give to it, adding to the comfort as the shooter grips the rifle.
Pros:
Ergonomics
Value
No real weight addition
aesthetics
The Downside:
The only draw backs to the Grip is that it's a rubber, which although very resilient, becomes faded by dirt and debris (such as dry skin).
Secondly, The interior cavity has a recessed lip, however there was no intention for turning it into a compartment...
Overall though. I look forward to taking it to the range and punching some paper with the added comfort of this grip.
I apologize that this is not the most technical review, but realistically, I wanted readers to have a hands on opinion of the product should someone wish to upgrade.
Copeland.
