I have an H&K P30L in 9mm that I want to try out in IPSC production. The gun has the DA/SA V3 Combat trigger and does not have a decocker. Once the slide is racked the gun is in single action but the hammer stays in the down position. Internally the hammer spring is cocked but the hammer is in the down position and the only way to release the hammer spring is to pull the trigger.
Since the gun has a spurless anti-snag hammer, it can only be cocked by racking the slide.

If I pull the trigger on an empty chamber the gun stays in double action and the trigger pull is about 9lbs. If I rack the slide and then pull the trigger in single action the trigger pull is a nice 4lbs.

So my question is since the gun cannot be "decocked" (visibly from the outside the gun is decocked but internally it is cocked) once loaded can I still use it in production? Would this fall under the same rule as the Glock? Would the trigger pull weight be measured in double action?

I didn't expect to see it on the list, but it's there so there must be an answer out there for you. If you don't have any luck here you should try the Global Village.

I just did an online search and found reference to a serrated decocking lever just to the left of the hammer for the DA/SA model. Does your gun not have that feature?

If it has a self decocker as you described it and the first shot is +5lbs and it is on "THE LIST" have fun.

this sounds like you have a DAO LEM trigger (Not the DA/SA which does have a decocker- I have that model).....if the trigger pull is regular action at 4lbs,...you need to add weight via a spring. I doubt you have that model,...it is supposed to be special order. THe heavier DAO trigger pull of approx. 9lbs is second strike capability,...if you get a hard primer or light primer strike. You would not likely use it,...even with lowered weight springs (FPB, trigger and hammer springs) you will likely not have any problems. Make sure it is actually 4lbs,..it likely is 5.5lbs+. I had a USP with the LEM trigger system,..and had to replace the (firing pin block)FPB,.and install a regular weight USP hammer spring to lower it to 6lbs.

Yes,...you can use a P30-L with LEM DAO trigger system in IPSC production,...so long as the minimum weight of 5lbs for trigger pull.

re:

I purchased the gun yesterday and after some research I found that the trigger is set at 4lbs. I called the dealer and they had the same gun in stock with SA/DA with decocker and they were able to switch it for me since the registration did not go through yet.
The dealer did say that they got this P30L with this trigger group by mistake.

Right on. Sometimes dealers dragging their heels with paperwork is a good thing.

good for you. I find out of the box my P30-L shot flat and the reset felt long in dryfire,..but I did not notice that in the first match I shot it in. It has been 100% reliable,...out of the box with BDX ammo and Federal Hydrashok.

Hmmmm....

Once the slide is racked the gun is in single action...

If I rack the slide and then pull the trigger in single action the trigger pull is a nice 4lbs.

It sure sounds like racking the slide puts the gun into single action...not fully decocked...and the first shot would NOT be double action.

APPENDIX D4
Production Division

17. Handguns deemed by IPSC to be single-action-only are prohibited. Handguns with external hammers must be fully decocked. First shot attempted must be double action. Competitors in this Division who, after he issuance of the start signal and prior to attempting the first shot, #### the hammer on a handgun which has a loaded chamber, will incur one procedural penalty per occurrence. Note that a procedural penalty will not be assessed in respect of courses of fire where the ready condition requires the competitor to prepare the handgun with an empty chamber. In these cases, the competitor may fire the first shot single action.
