So I need some clarification on a few things.

According to the rules for Productions Devision I am not limited my magazine length. I can add base plates/bumpers to my mags as long as they are supplied by the original manufacturer.

That being said I have 2 Shadow 2’s and I hate the bases of the mags. Already broken a few of them and I want to add base plates. CZ offers different bases on there website which would be “optional” as I can purchase them from the firearms marker. Would this not mean that they are allowed in Production?

if anyone is running pads in production I would love to see there setup.

Josko at Double Tap Sports carries some cool CZ basepads.

Or you can also look around to see who carries the Mec-Gar +2 basepads, which also work well.

From the current rule book:
16.2 Magazines accessible to a competitor during a COF must not contain more than 15 rounds at the Start
Signal. Identifying marks or decals, internal capacity limiters, bumper pads and additional witness holes,
which add or remove negligible weight to/from magazines, are permitted.

17. Aftermarket parts, components and accessories are prohibited, except as follows:
17.1 Aftermarket magazines are permitted, subject to 16.2 above.

You can use any base pads you like, as long as they don't significantly change the weight vs a factory type magazine. (no brass base pads)
As 17.1 states, you can even run other manufacturer's magazines.

I currently run my Tanfoglio mags in my Shadow with Xtreme basepads.
I've seen others run CZ mags with Henning basepads, and I'm sure there are a number of others out there that are just as good.

Can't remember if any of this is changing for the 2019 rulebook.

How much weight is "negligible" weight?

I would have thought IPSC would be smart enough to assign an actual number.

as nice of a guy as Taran is, the basepads for the Shadow series suck. They break, easily. I prefer Hennings or M-Arms, both superb quality and worth the money.

Could you elaborate on why or how they break? They look fairly sturdy.
I like the size of the Taran ones. M-Arms ones seem similar in size and design.

im going to need to pick up 20 or so of them so I want to be sure to get something that’s solid.

Taran's pads are too thin at the point where they attach to the magazine, and repeated dropping of them (and not even on concrete) will cause them to break, I've seen around 30 of them let go in the last 6 months and some were not even used that much. Maybe he has a few different designs, but all the ones I've seen have this issue. Both the factory/MecGar plastic +2s and the M-Arm metal copy (and other metal copies of the same design) have a lot more material and do not suffer from this issue. Henning's pads also have more material and don't have the issue either. Normally I'd put Taran's stuff at the top, but in this case it's a bad misfire.

Thanks for the clarification.
it makes my decision much easier that’s for sure. I’m looking at over $500 just in base pads so I want something that is going to last better than that.

I would assume that the +2 base pads are the only ones that I can use.
For instance Taran offers a +2 and +4 base pad. I would PREFER the +4 as I find the mags short and any extra length makes it easier for me to manipulate however I'm concerned that I would be not allowed to shoot with those.
Any clarification on that?

Grabbed one +2 basepads just to be sure that it will be legal for production. Gotta love Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopping.

lots of people have been using +4 pads, the key is "adds negligible weight" thing, and that can be very dependant on the RO who decides to make an issue of them.

That’s one thing I hate about the IPSC rulebook. Just give us a number. My friend makes me custom basepads and neither of us have any idea just how heavy negligible is.

Would you share your design? What improvement has the customized plate made?

No, he’s planning on starting a business so he’s not going to share anything. I wouldn’t know if there is any improvement in design over any basepads currently on the market, but he can pretty much make things however I want, whatever size, shape, colour, and with whatever logo I want (ie he made me some numbered ones with my club’s logo on them).

The market is pretty flooded with pads, so your buddy is going to have to either have something amazing or cheap to break into it with the pads

Well it’s not the only product he wants to carry. He already makes scope levels, bottom metal for rifles, magazine releases for different guns, etc, and can do some gunsmithing. So the main selling points for that product line would probably be that he’s willing to customize the basepads and put club or team logos on them, and make them for more unusual guns that people don’t normally shoot in IPSC.
