Archery season has just ended and I saw a pile of deer. They came into the bait but at the wrong time and when they were moving they stayed just out of range. Next year I'd like to try a feeder with a programable dispenser to perhaps pattern the deer a bit more to my advantage. Also, it will save on wasted feed and mean less trips to my spot to check bait and perhaps disturb the deer less often.

Have any of you used any of these ? I see they make just the mechnical part and you can just add your own container. How have they worked for you, and what are some recommendations as to what models are junk and which ones are good.

BTW muzzle loader opens today and if any of those deer come in and hang out just out of bow range they'll have a wee little surprise.:D

I have a Moultrie , 6.5 Gal, they do work good however, the deer don't really pattern to the dispensing times.

They still stick to whatever schedule or pattern they always have, the food will be on the ground when they get there.

That has been my observations from the last three years of having it in the same spot.

What it does do is when they do come to your area it will concentrate them at a spot that will be more conducive to your shooting set up or stand location.

Biggest advice I can give is to be very conservative with how much food you do dispense.I fill mine only every second week, my feeder runs a total of 8 seconds each day.It doesn't over feed them, just gives them a treat and reason to frequent the area.

What the battery life like on that unit ? Do you find certain grains dispense with few problems than others ? ie: clogging up the dispenser.

Did you by the whole unit with the bucket or just the motorized part and build your own.

Whole corn flows through with no problem. I made one with a 30 gal. drum I had, and purchased the Moultrie motor unit for $50. Easy to build, and you can program it to feed up to 6 times a day I think it is. When I was using it, I would have it shoot a small amount of corn every morning around 8am. If you have turkeys in the area, they will all come in for lunch.

I also had a small Moultrie solar panel attached to the drum which plugged directly into the motor. My solar panel got more indirect sunlight then direct sunlinght, but worked awesome, the battery never got low.

If you have any bears around, they will empty your whole drum. I had one spin the spinner plate(and bend the crap out of it) until it was empty. This is why I no longer use the feeder. I should pull it out of the woods and sell it I guess, but I am to lazy. :D

I use a Cabelas feeder. It feeds once a half hour after sunrise and once a half hour before sunset. It programs itself runnning off sunlight. You can program the amount it feeds each time. It uses a big square flashlight battery and lasts for months. I have fed all kinds of grain with no flow problems. I just bought the motorized part and built my own. I see deer come out and mill around until it dumps feed. Thet don't even flinch when it spreads the feed.

My battery is 3 years old, use a solar panel, the feeders says it is at 100% all the time, even when I put it back out in the fall it is still at 100% after sitting for 8 months.

No clogging problems at all with my grain.

I do believe that you will have determine exactly how much you dispense dependent on the type of grain you have.I am sure some will flow much better than others and moisture content will likely effect that as well.

I bought one of the Moultrie ones like this ( ht tp://www.wingsupply.com/wildlife-management/game-feeders/moultrie-new-pro-hunter-kit/ )
and used on a small plastic garbage can and hung it in a tree. It took AA batteries and worked fine. But the racoons climbed the tree and knocked it off the hooks, causing it to fall and break.
I would do a couple of things differently:
- add some shields to the trees so the little bastards can't climb.
- the flat bottom of the container doesn't allow it to work very well. I would add some kind of funnel to the bottom of the bucket to make the feed flow better.
- I was using "deer corn" with molasses from TSC store. The deer like it but it is sticky and gums things up. I would either use just plain corn/feed (cheaper) or also add cracked corn to the molasses corn to help it flow better.

Biggest advice I can give is to be very conservative with how much food you do dispense.I fill mine only every second week, my feeder runs a total of 8 seconds each day.It doesn't over feed them, just gives them a treat and reason to frequent the area.

I agree with this.
