I am thinking of getting a 3" barrelled revolver changed to a 2". Since I have prohib status I believe it wouldn't be a problem if I simply update my registration to reflect it? Anyone done this before?

The problem with going shorter is that it will need to be re registered to the new length, which they may say is creating a new gun. You will be best to give them a call. Ask for a tech, don't just ask whoever answers the phone

Should be no issue as long as you can come up with the barrel, as stated, they can't be imported, so unless you have one................Your going to need to talk to the RCMP techs.....I'm not sure if they'd view shortening a barrel to prohib lenght as creating a prohib device or not....maybe if you had the 3" barrel cut back?

Which revolver is it? Some are worth more with a 3" barrel. Some need more parts than just the barrel... And some are plentiful so it doesn't matter. I have the same thing to do, at some point my 3" round butt and 2" square butt revolvers are going to trade some parts, so I can finally have my 2" round butt S&W model 30...

CFC reply

I spoke with a tech at the CFC and was advised that a repair centre/retailer that has authorization to deal with prohibs CAN do my barrel switch. The law does not state that once a barrel is worn and/or damaged on a prohib the entire gun must be destroyed. It can be repaired/serviced and carry on life within it's classification but the old barrel must be turned in to police for destruction (presumably by the repair centre?) Specifically to my question, I can switch barrels to any length I wish within the classification as long as the CFC is notified so they can update their records. He also reminded me (obviously) that once you switch barrels to beyond prohibited length, it can never go back to a prohib barrel. I'm hoping my long time dream of owning a S&W 640 with the 1 7/8" barrel is still alive! I'll let you know...
