My father in law neglected to renew his Pal on time a few years ago and lost the ability to keep his prohib revolver. It is a S&W model 19 in .357 and has a 4" barrel, he is pretty attached to it, as it was one of his first revolvers when he joined the RCMP. We sent it to MD Charleton in Victoria and they were going to put a longer barrel on it for him but 2 years later, still no barrel. They tell him it is worth $50 - $100 (which we know is not the case). Any ideas of how and where to get a longer barrel? Do you know of any dealers which may give him a more fair value for it? Any help is appreciated, thank you,
-Chris

The problem with Prohib prices are they are extremely cost effective, as the number of people that are able to buy them dwindles, the market for them does as well so the price shrinks considerably. $50-100 seems low but depending on condition might not be too far, if you look on the EE regular prohib revolvers go in the $200-400 range so if they buy for $100 and sit on it and get $200 it might be reasonable.

Don't have leads on barrels but wanted to comment on the price question

Have them remove the barrel and turn it in--then re-register the rest of the revolver as a "frame" and keep looking for a barrel--they do turn up from time to time.
44Bore.

x2 on register it as a frame only. Then he is okay to keep his revolver, although you will be on a barrel hunt. Post a wtb add and I bet one will turn up, then take it to a gun smith. I wonder why Murray cant just do a swap, I have read many great things about his work and ability to resource (although I have never used him myself)

...and then contact Barry Jensen at Bit f Pieces in Delta BC. I am sure he can help you. 2yrs without action is ridiculous, but if they are in posession of it now, the can return to you once barrel surrendered and reregistered as frame only. Just to clarify, is the gun at MD Charlton as Murray is no longer there. He is on his own now and his business is on the web. I would think he if anybody would have a spare barrel kicking around.

If you are wedded to using a S&W barrel for the 19 then you will have some trouble. Why not just re-barrel with a custom barrel blank cut to 5". You get a shootable gun and maybe a better barrel. On another note, Bill C68 and the regulations have no barrel "collection or surrender rules." You do not have to surrender a prohibited barrel. The so-called rule is just something somebody made up.

A detached under 105mm handgun barrel is a prohibited device. It is legal when it is with a registered 12-6 pistol. If the pistol has been reclassified as restricted with a longer barrel installed, the short barrel does indeed become a prohibited device. Some dealers have endorsements on their business licences to be in possesssion of these barrels.

Reregistering a prohibited pistol as a restricted frame only won't work. The reclassifiaction to restricted won't happen until a +105mm barrel is installed.

A Model 19 prohib. should be worth more than $100. If Charlton isn't getting the job done, get it to a business that will.

There is another option. If it's a 4 inch barrel have a slug of metal welded to the existing barrel's muzzle then bore out and sleeve the barrel. Because the rifling is one continuous piece in the modified barrel it qualifies for conversion to Restricted.

I know this works because I've got an ex-prohib 66 with the 1/4 inch added on section and sleeved that I affectionatley named "Pinnochio".... :D

:agree:

The guys who have your gun are blowing bowel gas in your face. Hell, I'll say it, they are telling you an outright lie.

If it's in good shape it's worth at least double what their telling you. I'll conceed when you get down to brass tacks it's worth what someone will pay you for it. If I could pick up a good Model 19 for $200 I'd be doing cartwheels!

I'm not sure about barrels but Numrich out of New York State is a good source for parts. You have to check often but they get them in, likely be a 6" barrel but the goal is to get it reclassed and that would do it. I can't confirm that getting a barrel from them will be as easy as my extractor.

Note to self, MD Charlatan gets the big thumbs down. Dishonest people everywhere...seeing as their in it for the money a fair cash price would be about $150 to $175, again factoring in that I haven't met too many dealers that will do you any favours unless you have a long term relationship with them. That price I'm quoting you is very low. I'm broke and if I was offered a Model 19 (again in good shape) for $200 I'd find the cash.

Also another member mentioned you can get revolvers for about $100, and that would be correct. Beat service revolvers can be had for $100 or less. A good (and again I'm assuming it's in good shape) Model 19 isn't going to be had for $100, not a chance! If you find one for $100 you blew it, you should have spent $100 on lottery tickets cause the gods are smiling on you.

Why not just sell the gun as a prohib. If it's in nice shape it should easily get $4-450. Then buy a restricted one. And 2 yrs at the gunsmith is totally unacceptable even it was Browning himself I would find somewhere else. Epp's has a cnc shop making various barrels for him, so Doug may be able to help.

Here's what I would do - a brand new, restricted-length barrel can be purchased from Smith & Wesson (S&W still produce these barrels for their "Classics" line of revolvers, in various lengths) and installed on the gun by a licensed gunsmith.

Once it's checked by a verifier, and approved by the CFC, it becomes a normal restricted. And, your dad gets to keep the revolver that is special to him.

Just me $.02' worth...

Seems like there's probably a business opportunity for someone with a prohib license to buy them up and resell them in the US, or another country. If you can buy a revolver for $50 it must be worthwhile, especially if you can bulk up the export to the US somehow to get the paperwork done in a batch.

Just a thought. It would get more value for those with prohibiteds to dispose of.

ohh if it where that simple...and the $50 dollar S&W model 19 is pure fantasy. I had a beat 66 (stainless 19) and still paid well over $100 dollars for it.
